Chapter 31 - The False Trail

The tension in the air grew thicker with every passing hour. The hunters moved swiftly, their eyes scanning every corner, every shadow. They had been tracking Ethan and the baby for days, but with no sign of them, they were growing impatient. They could feel it—the presence of something they couldn't reach, something just out of their grasp.

"They have them," one of the hunters muttered, his voice low, but filled with conviction. "The terrestrials—those humans—they have Ethan and the baby."

His words hung in the air, heavy and unquestionable. The others nodded, their eyes narrowing with purpose. They had been chasing shadows, following dead ends, but now it made sense. The humans, fragile and insignificant, had somehow managed to secure the two most important pieces of the puzzle.

"They've hidden them," another hunter said, his voice rough with barely contained rage. "And we're going to tear this world apart until we find them."

The leader of the hunters, a tall figure with eyes as cold as ice, stepped forward. He didn't speak at first, his gaze drifting over the darkened forest where the humans had been seen last. His mind was working, calculating, but there was no room for doubt. The terrestrials had the key to everything. If they didn't find them soon, it would be too late.

"The baby is our priority," he finally said, his voice icy and commanding. "We've already lost time. If the humans have her, they'll use her against us. But Ethan... Ethan is expendable."

The others nodded in agreement, understanding the leader's logic. Ethan was a tool—valuable, yes, but the true power lay in the baby. She was the one they needed.

Meanwhile, far away from the hunters' relentless pursuit, Alex and Elena were racing against time. They didn't know how much longer they could hide Ethan and the baby. They could feel the eyes of the hunters, even in the places they thought were safe.

Alex was pacing in the dimly lit room, his hand gripping his phone, wondering if contacting the hunters again would do anything but hasten the inevitable. Elena sat at the table, her face a mask of determination, but inside, she was torn. She couldn't shake the feeling that the hunters weren't just after the baby—they were after everything. They weren't going to stop. Not ever.

"They think we have them," Elena muttered, her voice barely a whisper. "They think we're hiding Ethan and the baby. But they have no idea where they really are."

Alex turned to her, his brow furrowed in confusion. "What do you mean?"

"I mean we've led them on a false trail." Elena's eyes gleamed with a mix of anger and strategy. "We told them what they wanted to hear, gave them just enough to keep them chasing us, but the truth is—Ethan and the baby are nowhere near here."

Alex's eyes widened as the realization hit him. "So you lied to them...?"

"I had no choice," Elena replied. "If they knew the truth, they'd find them in seconds. But this... this will buy us time."

The cold laughter of the hunters echoed through the forest as they gathered, preparing to move on to the next spot. They had no idea they were chasing a ghost.

"They're not that smart," one of the hunters sneered, his voice dripping with contempt for the humans who dared to play their game. "They think they can outsmart us. But we'll catch them. We always do."
