Chen Qi's father was a school principal. From a young age, he forced Chen Qi to study and excel academically. If Chen Qi scored even one failing grade, his father would beat him mercilessly. His mother turned a blind eye, only concerned with pleasing his father because she knew that as long as his father was happy, she would have money.

When Zhang Jilian was young, his father was a drug addict who nearly killed his mother in a fit of rage. After the incident, Jilian's mother divorced him, and they lived peacefully until this day arrived.

February 16, 2025 – Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia

Zhang Jilian's mother was driving him to school when she noticed the road ahead was blocked by police. The flashing lights and yellow tape were glaring. Frowning, she had no choice but to turn around and take a detour.

At school, Jilian unbuckled his seatbelt and gave his mother a big hug. Just as he was about to step out of the car, his mother grabbed his hand tightly, her eyes filled with worry:

"The news today mentioned a new virus. Remember to wear your mask—don't make me worry."

Jilian pursed his lips and replied dismissively, "Got it."

With that, he slammed the car door and walked toward the school without looking back. Jilian entered the classroom and, as usual, headed straight to Liu Haoyu's seat, patting his shoulder:

"Hey, why are you so early today?"

Haoyu looked up with a smile, about to respond, when the classroom intercom suddenly crackled to life, cutting him off.

Meanwhile, Jilian's mother discovered that the bridge home was sealed off. She pulled over and hurried over to a police officer, her voice urgent:

"What's going on? Why won't you let us go home?"

The officer replied impassively, "Anyone crossing that bridge now must be quarantined. It's for everyone's safety."

Back at school, Jilian and his friends were eating in the cafeteria when Ye Meiyu suddenly stood beside him and smacked his head, saying:

"You're not gonna share such delicious food with me?"

Jilian ignored her, but Meiyu pressed further. Li Yitong, sitting nearby, quickly interjected:

"If you keep this up, I'm telling the teacher."

Meiyu shot Yitong a glance and scoffed, "Tch, boring."

During recess, a student suddenly felt unsteady and told the teacher:

"I need to use the restroom."

The teacher replied, "Go ahead."

Not long after, the student staggered down the hallway. A teacher noticed and approached to check on them...

The scene shifted. During class, the teacher suddenly heard commotion outside. Frowning, they walked to the window to look. Just then, the classroom door burst open, and a student stumbled in, clutching their neck, their face pale and voice trembling:

"The people outside… they've gone crazy!"

Before anyone could react, the student's body convulsed violently, their eyes rolling back as black liquid oozed from their mouth. Within seconds, they let out a guttural growl and lunged at Chen Qi, the closest person.

Chen Qi reacted swiftly, grabbing the teacher's arm and yanking them forward as a shield between himself and the infected student. Then, with a forceful shove, he pushed both the teacher and the attacker out the door, slamming it shut and leaning against it, gasping for breath.

Before the class could process what had happened, they noticed survivors at the back door. Liu Haoyu immediately moved to let them in, but Chen Qi pulled him aside and shoved the survivors back outside before locking the door. Moments later, bloodcurdling screams echoed from the hallway.

Haoyu's eyes widened in fury. "Why'd you push them out? They could've survived!"

Chen Qi shot him a cold glare, his tone emotionless. "How do you know they weren't infected? If they turned, we'd all be dead."

The classroom fell into heavy silence. Everyone lowered their heads, too afraid to speak.

Haoyu clenched his fists, his voice shaking. "Then why sacrifice the teacher? You should've been the one to die!"

As the two nearly came to blows, Li Yitong rushed between them. "Stop fighting! This isn't the time for infighting!"

Zhang Jilian finally spoke up. "Are those things outside like the zombies in movies?"

The entire class tensed. Wu Jianyi stammered, "Has the apocalypse really started? We're doomed…"

Jilian frowned. "Don't say that. Who told you we're doomed?"

Wu Jianyi remained frantic. "Then what? Wait for rescue? They'll never make it in time—we'll starve first!"

After a pause, Jilian scanned the room and said firmly, "If we don't take the risk, how will we know what happens?"

Liu Haoyu stepped forward. "I'll go with you."

They looked around. "Who else is coming?" The room stayed silent, students murmuring among themselves:

"Who'd follow you to their death?"

Then, Chen Qi spoke up, calm and resolute. "We're dead either way. Might as well fight for a chance to survive."

His words rippled through the room. Slowly, others lifted their heads, a flicker of hope in their eyes.

They began planning their route:

"We're on the second floor, far left. We'll cross the hall to the staircase on the right, then head for the school's back exit."

Mimicking movies, they broke brooms in half and taped textbooks to their arms for makeshift armor. In the end, the group leaving consisted of Zhang Jilian, Liu Haoyu, Chen Qi, Li Yitong, Wu Jianyi, and her best friend.

Elsewhere, Jilian's mother, unable to cross the bridge, decided to stop at a supermarket. As she parked, she saw a crowd fleeing in panic. Just as she stepped out to ask, a frenzied man slammed into her car window. Terrified, she floored the gas and sped off, determined to pick up her son from school and escape together.
