Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: The Awakening of Shadow

The sky was no longer the sky.

When Zhar'Kan raised his arm for the first time, the very air trembled. The atmosphere thickened like molten lead, and the light of dawn…turned violet.

A circle of darkness opened behind him.Not a tear. Not a common summoning. It was a vortex of chaos,a living wound carved into the fabric of reality.

And from it, they emerged.

Four figures stepped forth, one after another,as if torn straight from the abyss.

They were not the same—each carried a different aura—but they all shared one terrifying truth:

corruption adored them.

One wielded a spear made of blackened bone.Another wore armor that dripped living blood. The third floated, legless, shrouded in cursed bandages etched with glowing runes that seemed to scream. The last… carried a staff with a pulsing, beating heart at its tip.

—The Generals —I whispered.The hands of Zhar'Kan.

And then, as if that weren't enough…

the lesser creatures began to pour in.

Hundreds.Maybe more. From cracks, from shadows, even from the sky itself.

A tsunami of flesh and hatred.

The battle had begun.

And if we wanted to survive…

we had to split hell apart.

—Pablo! —I shouted—. The one with the spear is yours.

Pablo nodded without hesitation. His own weapon glowed on his back.

—Romina! Take the one in blood armor. Looks like your type.

—Gladly —she replied, already activating her runic defenses.

—Patricio! The one in bandages is yours. If anyone can read those curses, it's you.

He made the sign of the cross and stepped forward without fear.

—Captains of Echo-Zero! You take the one with the staff. Hit him as a unit. Don't break formation.

They lined up with military precision. No one objected. No one hesitated.

—The rest of the squad, with me! —Vega shouted—Tear through those monsters! Don't let them through the line!

The remaining Awakened and soldiers formed behind her like a tide of steel.

And I…I stepped forward without looking back.

Because Zhar'Kan still hadn't moved.

And that was the most terrifying thing of all.

Thirty meters from him, I stopped.

He watched me.

Or rather—he felt me.As if his presence was already inside my mind, scanning my thoughts, my fears, my memories.

Vega stepped beside me.She didn't speak.She didn't need to.

Sometimes, war doesn't begin with words. It begins with resolve.

And the two of us…

were going to stop a god.
