Chapter 14 - chap 14: Shattered Dream

In that moment when they stepped to the edge of reality everything was torn apart. A silent explosion echoed, not in their ears, but from deep within their souls. The space in front of them cracked like shattered glass. Colors distorted. Time collapsed. Every sense of direction unraveled.

And then—they fell. Not onto ground, but through layers of universes, each pulse like the tremor of a new dimension. Cold, then burning. Still, then chaotic. Every breath tore through their lungs. It felt like being ripped from their very selves.

Then… silence.

A gasp. Her feet touched ground not real ground, but a surface soft as silk, glowing like moonlight dissolved in mist.

Lina opened her eyes. She was still standing. But Kai… Kai was no longer beside her.

She whispered: "No…" as she turned to look around. But here, there was no sound, no wind, no Kai. Only… herself.

Another presence stood before her not a reflection, not an illusion. A person. It was Lina. Yet the gaze, the stillness, the aura it had never been her.

The other didn't speak. She simply raised a hand. And within it was a creature not a beast, not a machine but something alive, ancient, and sentient. It shimmered like living light, breathing, observing Lina.

Lina rasped: "Who are you?" Her voice was dry.

The other Lina smiled softly, like the last breeze of autumn: "I am what you will become. Or what you once denied."

Lina stepped back cautiously: "Did you bring me here?"

The reply was calm: "No. Your fear did."

The glowing creature floated around Lina, brushing past her shoulder, her forehead, as if scanning every layer of her emotion. It had no eyes, yet she felt its gaze. A gaze that pierced through her.

She asked: "Where is this?"

The answer came: "The space between spaces. Where souls still live but belong nowhere."

The words struck something deep within her. Because part of her already knew it was true.

She called out: "Kai?"

The other Lina responded: "He's elsewhere. A different branch of the path. Not far. But not close enough to save you if you fall."

Lina clenched her teeth. She had fought through countless worlds, stood firm on the edge of life and death, only to now be lost in a dimension unknown, face to face with another self and a nameless creature.

Yet strangely she wasn't afraid. Instead, she asked: "Why am I here?"

The other Lina didn't answer right away. She touched the creature, as if giving it a signal. Instantly, the surroundings changed. The ground melted into liquid. The space shifted blue, purple, black, white like a spinning lucid dream.

And before Lina, dozens of versions of herself appeared. Each one fighting. One crying. One on her knees, bloodied and broken. One had just killed Kai. One held him in her arms, eyes filled with despair.

Lina whispered, heart pounding: "What are they?"

The other replied: "Choices. Possibilities. Endings that may come if you continue forward."

Her throat dried. The visions were too real. Too cruel. But she didn't look away.

The other spoke again, voice still like mist: "You can choose to give up. Stay here safe, untouched by war or pain. This creature will keep you. You will no longer fear the power inside you."

Lina asked: "And if I refuse?"

The answer came: "Then you'll face it all. The pain. The losses. And the worst version of yourself."

Lina closed her eyes. An image surfaced Kai, calling her name through flames. His hand touching hers, in that moment between life and death.

She opened her eyes: "No. I won't stop."

The other Lina didn't look surprised. She simply nodded: "Then step forward."

The glowing creature shot into Lina's chest, passing through flesh and bone without a trace. But inside it was an explosion. The power surged like the sun rising after endless night. No more confusion. No more fear.

Only a whisper in her ear: "Kai is waiting."

And the world burst again in light.

Scene Shift: The Real World

Kai jolted awake, panicked. He sat up on cracked ground, cold sweat dripping from his brow. Lina was gone. But he knew she was alive. And she was getting closer.

( The Cracked Mirror Path)

The light faded, leaving behind a space so still and dark that it almost suffocated her. Lina stood in the middle of nothingness, her heart still pounding from the echo of the living creature merging into her a stream of glowing light breathing within her, as if it was becoming a part of her very soul. There were no illusions, no other versions of herself. Only her alone, and for the first time, she didn't feel lost.

She took a step forward. She had no idea where she was going, but each step seemed to be guided by an invisible force, one newly awakened within her. Beneath her feet, the moonlit silk-like surface melted away, transforming into large mirrors that reflected not images, but memories her past, Kai's past, and even things that hadn't happened yet but could.

One mirror shattered, breaking into seven shards as she moved closer. Inside, Kai was fighting, surrounded by soldiers cloaked in black with hollow eyes like wooden puppets. He didn't call for help. He didn't look her way. But his eyes those eyes, always searching for something in the darkness made her tremble. It was as if he was reaching out to her, but couldn't find her in time.

Lina clenched her fists. She had fought through countless worlds, stood on the edge of life and death, and now she was trapped in a place that wasn't a maze, but a reflection of herself her choices, her fears, and her possible futures made real, right before her.

A voice echoed inside her mind not from the air, but deep from within her own soul. Find the cracked mirror. It leads to reality, but only if you're ready to face the truth.

Lina nodded to herself, her breath steady. There were no words left to say. The mirrors lined both sides of an endless path, flickering like stars in the distance. One of them had a deep crack running through its center a jagged line that spread like a web, distorting the reflection of what lay beyond it.

She stepped closer, her heartbeat thumping in her chest, and placed her palm against its cold surface. It was freezing, but it didn't reflect anything only an endless dark void waiting to consume everything.

Lina whispered: "I'm not afraid."

She stepped through the crack.

Kai stood in the ruins, his body feeling like it was suspended in the void. The land beneath him was fragmented, floating in pieces like the last remnants of a dying reality. He didn't know where he was, but he knew something or someone was coming. And that someone was Lina.

His eyes flickered with anxiety. He'd lost her. He had to find her, no matter what. But the landscape around him, shattered and lifeless, gave no answers.

The ground trembled beneath his feet, the cracks widening like the remnants of a broken dream. The horizon darkened.

Then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw it the crack. A fracture in the sky, glowing with unnatural light. The wind howled as if a storm was rolling in, and the ground beneath him cracked open. A whirlwind of energy spun wildly around the darkening sky.

And then, through that crack Lina emerged.

She wasn't the same girl he'd once known. Her eyes no longer held the uncertainty and fear that had once plagued her. There was clarity there now. A strength. Her presence radiated power, not just from the force within her but from an unshakable resolve that she carried in every fiber of her being. Her hair flowed freely around her, as if the very air was alive with energy.

Kai took a hesitant step forward, his voice trembling: "Lina?"

She nodded, her gaze unwavering. No words were necessary. They had found each other. In the middle of broken realities, amidst shattered dreams and realities that had not yet fully formed, they had crossed paths once more.

But before they could speak, before they could embrace, a loud sound shattered the moment the screech of tearing metal followed by a deep, rumbling boom. The very air vibrated as though the world itself was being split apart.

From above, something large, dark, and monstrous fell toward them. It wasn't entirely human. It wasn't entirely beast. It was something older something ancient, an entity from another time, lurking in the cracks between realities. Its eyes Lina's reflection seemed to pierce into her very soul.

Kai immediately positioned himself in front of Lina, his muscles tensed and his hand reaching for his blade. But Lina was not afraid. She stood strong beside him, her energy swirling around her like a storm.

The entity's eyes glowed, not with malice, but with a strange recognition. It paused, almost as if it were studying her, understanding her power, measuring what she was capable of. Its voice echoed, deep and resonating like the rumble of thunder: "You've crossed the line, Lina. You've awakened."

Lina stepped forward, her eyes burning with defiance. "I've chosen my path. And I will not turn back."

The creature let out a low growl. It was not a threat. It was a promise. A promise of what was to come of the trials that would test not just her strength, but her very soul.

With a sudden movement, it lunged at them, its claws slashing through the air.

But Lina was ready.
