Beta Jiwon's POV
I rushed to join the others when I saw my master's wife, Kajan, sitting in a spot where she was supervising the job. I stood behind her, just a few steps away, observing how she ordered strong men around. She was lucky to be given such privilege because of her husband — ordering great men around. She sat on an iron chair, the kind that could only fit a single person. I noticed how round she looked from behind. She rested her legs on the back of one of the men who was supposed to join the others in rebuilding the cells, while one of the female Omegas cleaned her toenails. I had fed my eyes enough, so I walked forward and bowed before her. She threw her hand toward me in response. I joined the other men in carrying sand and heavy-weighted irons. I also realized that they hadn't eaten or drunk anything since 6:00 a.m. that morning when they started the work, and it was already 11:00 a.m. My mind boiled, but I made sure it wasn't obvious from my looks. She soon slapped the girl who cleaned her nails when she accidentally spilled a portion of the liquid used for cleaning her toenails. As I watched from the dark corner of my eyes, her two children ran to her — a boy and a girl. The boy is a Beta, while the girl is a hybrid. In our territory, hybrids are made to work endlessly. If my boss discovered you were a hybrid, he would always use you for any work that came up in the territory. But how did she end up being a hybrid? There were no crossbreeds in their family; Guyong and his wife were both wolves. If Guyong didn't think about that, how much more a mere servant like me? Over 40 of the men who labored in the cell were hybrids, and 15 of them were Omegas. My boss would rather treat them this way than kill them. I remember when he declared that all hybrids should be locked up in prison, but later he abolished the law himself, giving them the privilege of freedom with hard labor.
As payun and Jisoo played, Jisoo unknowingly ran into the way of one of the laborers, causing him to fall with the heap of sand on his head. He would rather fall than hit Jisoo or make him fall to the ground. Kajan immediately ordered the guards to flog him, which they did.
I continued working as if I didn't notice anything. My mind kept troubling me about Nara. Then she mind-linked me again, "Haven't you done enough over there?"
"We are rebuilding the cells!"
"So how do you expect me to go to Hayan all alone? This is the second time you are turning me down. The first was when I needed you to get the diamond stone out of the forbidden altar in the secret house, you couldn't. Now Sungmin has got it. I don't know how, but he has it!"
"What! You mean a wolf from another pack stole the diamond stone?" I said with high curiosity, that was disgusting.
"Will you still come or not?" Nara asked in agitation, not responding to my question.
"I promise, I will let you know in no time. Just hold on a little and wait for me. When I come, we will also trace that fool of a fiancé that you've got and collect the diamond stone. I don't think he even knows the use of it!"
"Hey you! Come over here!" Kajan called, disrupting the mind-link. I hope she didn't notice that I was mind-linking Nara. "Where is your second?" she asked. My eyeballs twisted. I don't think I understood her clearly enough.
"I am sorry, my Lady. I don't think I understand what you're talking about." Her eyes lit up. She looked around her as if trying to read the facial expressions of the maids that stood behind her to see if any of them would dare to find it funny, but they were too afraid to. Then she burst out in laughter alone, drawing the attention of the others.
"You do not know your second?" she asked, facing me.
"I am sorry, my Lady."
"Where is Nara?" Chills ran through my veins. Has she been watching us secretly to know that I was close to Nara? Oh my goodness!
"I am sorry, my Lady, but Nara is not my second, and I do not know anything about her or her whereabouts." I saw that suspicious look on her face.
"I smell lies!" she said, sniffing as she drew close to me. I began to shake, but my eyes were strong, and my face was thick with fierceness.
"Lock him up!" she ordered the guards that stood there. I looked at both of them, not understanding what I have done to deserve this.
"My Lady! Please do not throw me in there. I do not know where Nara is!" I yelled into the dark air as my voice trailed off like a shadow.
I was there, trying to mind-link Nara again, but she didn't get… "What was going on with her over there?" I asked myself. I was out in the same cell with two wolves who committed a crime. According to the news that we heard, Omega Yumpuah, a male wolf, was caught red-handed trying to rape Jin, one of Kajan's maids. The other wolf is a female, her name is Zami. She was accused of poisoning her child — the 2-year-old daughter she had for Guyong.
Two years ago, when Guyong was celebrating his victory, he drank so much that he got drunk because he had killed a rival wolf from another pack and collected his pack members, adding them to his, subjecting them to forced labor and making them bow to him. But one escaped. During the celebration, he ordered seven female wolves to dance before him, and while they were dancing, he hauled one of them away. She cried her eyes out, begging for her release, but he took her into his chamber and raped her. He kept her there, sleeping with her throughout that week before he released her to her parents. She was their only daughter, and she was a virgin, but Guyong broke her virginity.
Zami was born in Guyong's territory. She grew up there, and she was only 15 years old when she got disvirgined by Guyong. And after 11 months, she gave birth to her daughter. We know that she doesn't like the girl because she was the result of her pain, bleeding, and rejection from her own parents, but something tells me that she did not kill her own child.
Zami's father was killed by Guyong the day his daughter Zami gave birth to her child, Karaat, whom they accused Zami of killing. Guyong ordered his guards to set Zami's father ablaze for letting two wolves escape from the prison, though they were later caught trying to escape from the territory. Zami's father was one of the prison guards; he was in charge of that cell unit. While Zami's mother lives alone in their house, she doesn't have another child except Zami.
"Why are you here?" a voice sprang my mind back to life! I turned to see which of them spoke to me. It was Zami.
"Nothing! Our Lady suspects that I know about Nara's whereabouts," I replied, feeling ashamed. I had once walked through the prison walkway, passing them as I threw a judgmental look their way. I crucified them with my eyes, condemning them with the expression on my face, but now, I was in the same cell with them.
