(Opening Scene: Kurozane and Astrid continue their journey through the monster forest, the darkness deepening as night falls. Astrid has lit a small, magically sustained torch, casting flickering shadows among the trees. The concept of "familiars" still ঘুরপাকs in Kurozane's mind.)
As they walked, the silence was broken by the hooting of nocturnal creatures. Astrid, seemingly comfortable in the dim light, glanced at Kurozane.
"You seemed… unfamiliar with the term 'familiar' earlier," she observed, her stormy eyes thoughtful. "It's quite common for those with inherent abilities, especially nobles trained in certain arts, to bond with a creature. The bond can vary in strength and nature, but often the familiar acts as a companion, a guardian, and a conduit for their wielder's power."
She continued, "Local legends speak of ancient mages whose familiars were beings of immense power – dragons, elementals, even creatures from other realms. The strength of the bond is said to reflect the potential of the wielder. A strong familiar often signifies a powerful individual."
Kurozane listened intently, trying to reconcile this information with his experience with Eclipse. Eclipse hadn't been bonded through any ritual he knew of; it had simply appeared in a moment of extreme need, seemingly connected to the void itself.
As if to illustrate her point, Astrid raised her arm and whistled softly, a melodic, high-pitched sound that echoed through the trees. A moment later, a magnificent falcon, its feathers the color of a stormy sky with streaks of brilliant white, descended from the darkness of the canopy and landed gracefully on her outstretched gauntlet. Its intelligent, piercing eyes surveyed Kurozane with a regal air.
"This is Zephyr," Astrid said, a hint of affection in her voice as she gently stroked the falcon's feathers. "He has been my companion since I was a child. Our bond allows me to channel my storm magic with greater precision and range. He also serves as my eyes in the sky."
Zephyr ruffled its feathers and gave a sharp cry, as if acknowledging her words. Kurozane watched the interaction, fascinated. The clear connection between Astrid and the falcon was evident, a stark contrast to the mysterious and unspoken bond he shared with Eclipse.
He thought of Eclipse's shadowy form, its silent presence, its sudden appearances and disappearances. It felt less like a trained companion and more like an intrinsic part of himself, a manifestation of the darkness within.
Astrid, noticing his gaze, smiled faintly. "Every bond is different, I suppose. Perhaps your… serpent… has a unique origin, tied to your own unusual abilities." Her stormy eyes held a hint of curiosity once more.
Kurozane simply nodded, still trying to understand the nature of his connection with the shadowy being that had saved him and led him through the void. The concept of familiars offered a new lens through which to view Eclipse, but it still felt like a piece of a much larger, still-unfolding puzzle.
