Chapter 73 - The Healers Puzzlement

(Opening Scene: The training arena is cleared, the lifeless beast removed with utmost caution. Zane, accompanied by Astrid and Headmaster Theron, is escorted to the academy's infirmary, where a team of healers awaits with a mixture of apprehension and scientific curiosity.)

The atmosphere in the infirmary was noticeably different than Zane's previous visit. The healers, alerted to the extraordinary circumstances, maintained a respectful distance, their gazes fixed on Zane with a mixture of caution and intense scrutiny.

Head Healer Elara, a woman known for her extensive knowledge of magical biology and toxins, approached cautiously, her hands encased in protective, glowing gloves. "Headmaster," she addressed Theron, her voice measured. "The reports are… unprecedented. A student exhibiting venomous properties upon physical contact?"

Headmaster Theron nodded gravely. "Indeed, Healer Elara. It appears to be a direct consequence of his bond with his familiar. We need to understand the nature of this venom, its potential effects on the host, and any possible countermeasures."

Healer Elara and her team began their examination, employing various diagnostic spells and carefully taking non-contact readings of Zane's bio-magical aura. Runes flickered around him, displaying complex patterns that the healers studied with furrowed brows.

"His life force readings are stable," one of the younger healers reported, "but there is a faint… residue… a dark, almost shadowy energy signature interwoven with his own. It pulses subtly, particularly in his extremities."

Healer Elara nodded. "That is likely the source. It appears Eclipse's venom has, in a way, become integrated into his very being, circulating within his magical pathways." She carefully levitated a small, inert crystal towards Zane's hand, observing it closely as it approached. There was no visible reaction.

"It seems the venom is only activated upon direct physical contact with another living organism," Healer Elara surmised. "A defense mechanism, perhaps? Or an involuntary reaction?"

They conducted further tests, carefully introducing minute magical energies to Zane's skin, but there was no triggering of the venomous effect. The mystery of its activation remained.

Astrid stood nearby, her concern for Zane evident. "Is it… dangerous for him?" she asked, her voice laced with worry.

Healer Elara sighed, her expression thoughtful. "We do not yet know, Lady Montaigne. His own magical system seems to be tolerating it, but the long-term effects are uncertain. We will need to monitor him closely."

Headmaster Theron placed a reassuring hand on Zane's shoulder, careful to avoid direct skin contact. "We will understand this, Zane. The academy has resources and knowledge that will aid us. In the meantime, you must be mindful of any physical contact."

The chapter ends with the healers continuing their perplexing examination of Zane, the mystery of his venomous touch deepening, and the unsettling reality of his newfound and potentially dangerous ability settling upon them all.
