Chapter 3 - The Mafia's Charm

Chapter 3

Hailey's POV:

Grandma was still not back when I finished making dinner. There was nothing else left for me to do besides practice my lines for the school play. I was a lone wolf. No friends. It didn't bother me that much because I had already created an imaginary world in my head through my acting, where I escape to whenever I was badly hurt.

The entire neighbourhood wanted nothing to do with me. For one, even though we stayed in the slums where everyone was poor, we were the poorest. Could barely afford three square meals and a good change of clothes. The roof to our house was leaking and some part of the house had fallen off. It was an old bamboo supported structure with a bare floor.

I was still grateful that I had a roof over my head. Secondly, it was no secret what happened to my mother. The more reason grandma wanted nothing to do with me. I brought disgrace to her. Everyone thought I was cursed. A child who was conceived because her poor mother was raped, and she had to kill herself to not deal with looking at my face every day. Because I would have stood as a reminder of the pain she passed through.

Who wants to be friends with a girl that has a rapist for a father? No one.

Deep into the night, as I was about to fall asleep, I heard the door creep open. It was grandma and a friend of hers who had wild makeup for a woman her age. As the woman saw me, she gave me a disgusting look. Ignoring her degrading look, I walked over to grandma.

"Welcome, grandma. Dinner is ready. Would you like me to dish it for you?" I dared not to ask where she has been all this while, only to return now?

"You worthless child! How dare you cause trouble when you are of no use?" She roared, flipping the dining table, which barely stood straight, over.

Squealing, I jumped up in fear. The table almost landed on my foot if I hadn't been quick to move.

"I have told you to put her to better use. It is because she is lazying around all day and goes to that expensive school that makes her have the spare time of embarrassing you," barbie doll grandma's friend said.

"I know what to do," Grandma said, storming across to where I stood. Grabbing me by my hair, she began to drag me into the room.

"Grandma, you are hurting me. Please, please," I cried out. "I am sorry. Please," I continued to cry out.

Pushing me to the floor, "pack your filthy things, you are leaving my house! Get out!"

Sobbing, "grandma, I have nowhere else to go. Please — don't do this. Please," I knelt and begged.

"I don't care. You are not just staying here. To think that I have accommodated you all these whiles, makes me want to throw up. I wasted my resources on someone who brought nothing but misfortune to me. Get out!" She screamed.

"Grandma, please."

"Susan, calm down. Screaming is not good for your health, and kicking her out is of no good either. Just let this slide. There will be a better opportunity to deal with her," barbie doll grandma's friend said as she found her way to my room.

"Thank you heavens that Patricia was here to call me down because nothing would have stopped me from throwing you out on the street." She spat.

Still sobbing, I gave Patricia a thankful look. Whatever she was implying didn't make sense to me. What matters was that she had saved me from getting thrown out. Wearing that kind of short gown that exposed her cleavage and having such bold makeup, she wasn't a total disaster.

Patricia drew my grandma Susan back to the living room, where they chatted and chatted to God knows what.

I kept pondering on why she was angry and what trouble was she talking about that I caused? Was it the incident with Mr. High and mighty, or was it something else? And, if it was the incident with Mr. High and might, how did she get to know? I wish I had a fairy godmother who could work magic and tell me the depth of the problem I had just gotten myself into.
