I feel Mom tense beside me. "Just scouts," I say under my breath.
"Lewis," a voice booms again. It's deep and commanding, meant to make you feel small. "Sara! We know you're in there."
Mom takes a step forward, her hands trembling at her sides. "We don't want any trouble."
They laugh, a thick, harsh sound that fills the room. "Trouble finds you anyway." Two figures advance toward us, rain-soaked and unmistakable.
"Get out!" I shout and snap my fingers. A fireball bursts to life in front of us, flaring with an orange glow that reflects in their eyes.
"We don't want to hurt you," one of them says, sidestepping the flames with ease. "We need your help your debt will be settled if you comply."
"We're done helping." Mom says straightforward and to the point. There's a pause like there considering something
"We're not idiots we know you don't really want this life."
"We should go," Mom whispers, grabbing my wrist. I pull away from her grip.
"No," I say. "Not again we can't keep being afraid to just live having to look over our soldiers."
"There's nowhere left to run," the first man says. He moves toward us, his coat trailing dragging across the floor.
"Get away from us! Shield!" I slide my hand against the air the walls move when I move my right hand creating a wall between us and them. "
"Cute trick," the second man smirks. He and his partner exchange glances, they both raise their hands simultaneously, "Fire."
A blast strikes the air, loud as a crack of lightning. The shield shudders under it, warping with the force. I hold my ground but feel the weight of it pushing against me. I try and keep the wall intact as long as possible.
"They'll break through eventually." Mom warns "They will kill us if we don't comply."
I set the wall down, "Wait if you truly do need our help." I toss a stone bracelet. "Put it on then swear we'll be free forever."
The fire man catches it midair and looks at his partner they exchange a glance for a few seconds.
"Swear."
"If you think you can trust us…" The stone glows with a faint red as the bracelet clicks around his wrist. "Then you're just as foolish as we thought."
"But we promise." The second man's grin widens. "You have our word." The 2 men slip the bracelets on as it burns into the skin which seals the deal if broken it cripples taking a chunk of their wrists with them and killing them slowly. Including anyone there associated with. "We'll be back in 2 day time be packed."
They vanish into midair The door hangs crooked on it's hinges. "Repair." I say to the door as it put itself back onto the walls. "What now Mom?"
Mom leans forward. "I don't know guess tomorrow we start packing. I don't want this life for you Lewis."
sit there staring at the broken door that was just repaired wondering why they just won't leave us alone. I know that eventually they will find us again if we don't go with them. I know that they will kill us on sight if we choose not to go with them. All I want is to live a normal life and it seems it's slipping away from me slowly. I feel powerless against them no matter what I do they find us. No matter where we run, they find us. The only thing we can do is go with them and hope they don't fuck us over again.
I head up to my bed and rest my eyes for the night, finally peace and quiet.
