Chapter 4 - Ep4: The Knock at Midnight

Amara hadn't been able to sleep.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw golden ones staring back.

Lucian Blackwood had haunted her thoughts since the meeting and not in the handsome, broody vampire way

No. He looked at her like she was filth. A bug under his boot. Something he regretted not crushing.

She wondered if she did something wrong or that was just his personality

And yet…

He stepped in for her.

Why?

It was past midnight when she finally kicked off the covers and got up. Her apartment was quiet. The kind of quiet that hummed against her skin.

She was just pouring herself a glass of water when she heard an unexpected sound

Knock knock.

Amara froze.

Another knock. Harder. Slower.

She had no friends in this town yet. And she wasn't expecting a vist from anybody. And that sound wasn't friendly.

It was deliberate.

She moved toward the door, heart racing.

Who's there?

Silence.

She peeked through the peephole.

Nothing.

She waited a beat longer. Then slowly turned the lock.

She opened the door

And saw no one.

Just a small, black envelope lying on her welcome mat.

Her name was written across the front in unfamiliar handwriting.

She picked it up with shaky fingers and opened it.

Inside was a single sentence:

You don't belong in their world. Leave before it's too late.

There was no signature .

No return address.

Just that.

Her blood turned cold.

She shut the door fast, locking it—then dead-bolting it for good measure.

Something in her gut told her this wasn't a prank.

This wasn't paranoia.

Someone had been here.

And they weren't just warning her.

They were watching her.
