Chapter 4 - THE BIRD

Ulric went south and south, deep among the trees. The path to the steel tower was in south, and his mother, to her work, went to west of the house. He was exhausted as he'd already travelled so much. He didn't know what could the words of that shadow actually mean. All he heard was Steel Tower and South, so he did it. He sat down for a moment and ate some of his fruits, which he'd brought in case if he'd die of starvation. He stood up again and walked in the same direction. Minutes passed. Sometimes, he wanted himself to run to reach there fast, and sometimes, he wanted himself to walk to not get too much exhausted. He stopped for a minute. He had an idea which he thought could lead him there faster. If that idea was good or not depended on his skills in climbing. He usually did that in a tree which was just near his house. That tree which he climbed near his house was smaller. Nevertheless, the trees there made him feel very uncomfortable. Their sizes were enormous, and it made him, even thinking, frightened if he tried to climb and tumble down. After those injuries, he wouldn't make it in the steel tower.

He'd been a normal boy, living normal life in his house, so this journey was overwhelming him. He repeatedly thought of going back, but curiosity made him walk and walk and walk. He, eventually, stopped after he decided his choice: he'd climb a tree to see if the steel tower was near. If it was near, he'd continue. If it wasn't, he'd go back to his house. He put his bag on the ground and was relieved for a moment. He lay for a rest, stood up again, and walked towards a tree. That tree was big, too. If the task was successful, he'd have a glimpse of the steel tower quickly, or not if it wasn't near. Nevertheless, being so much exhausted, he knew that he was so deep in the forest and in the south. He sighed, and he, him eyeing the tree, ran towards it and hugged it tightly. Slowly and slowly, he felt himself going up and up. The tree was even bigger when he was climbing it. He did not want to look down, as he knew he, already, was so much remote from the ground. Eventually, after a minute, he felt leaves, and he climbed over them, and from tiny timbers to thin sticks, he was finally at the top of the tree now.

The view was fascinating. He was in awe. He'd never seen something so beautiful, and the vibes of nature made him feel very relaxed. He stood there for a moment with closed eyes. Then, after some time, he opened them and began to survey the trees for the steel tower. He could see it! He could see the tower! The steel tower was like a graveyard, and it was so quiet. The feeling of emptiness, even not inside the tower, he could feel it. That tower was known for that. No one actually visited there, and now that Ulric had come, he was excited. He closed his eyes and whispered, "I made it! I'm not going back now!"

Some time passed with him still on top of the tree. That vantage was so awesome to him, and he eventually thought of climbing down. Until, he, again, felt some presence of an invisible bird, soaring in air just above him. Yet, he could not see it but sense the feeling. What were those feelings about? Only these were the feelings and senses he felt from since when he was born, since he was toddler, and this feeling was stronger. It was like that invisible bird was telling him something or demanding him something. He could not control it, and he climbed down the tree. He never told Friszta or Siana about those feelings. They'd evidently think he was mad. Every time he thought to tell them about this, these words had reminded him not to. These words weren't his. These were of someone else in his mind, and he didn't know whose.

He climbed down the trees in the same way — hugging tightly around the tree and slowly going down and down. Until he touched the ground or felt it was nigh his feet. He eventually touched the ground and glanced last time to the tree. The feeling of invisible bird was gone, and he was more relieved now that he'd found it. The steel tower. The only thing that was left to do was to move forward further south to the steel tower.

He took his first step and began to run forth to the tower.
