Chapter 19 - Chapter 17:The Call of Duty

The days in Natlan had been unlike any Capitano had ever experienced. The fire of the land, the free-spirited people, and most of all, Mauvika—she had ignited something within him. With each passing day, he found himself letting go of the rigid structure of his past life, embracing the wild beauty of Natlan and its people. Mauvika's presence beside him was both a challenge and a comfort, a fire that burned bright and warm, unlike anything he had ever known.

But the peace he had found was not meant to last.

One evening, as they stood atop a volcanic ridge watching the sun set behind the fiery peaks of Natlan, a strange stillness filled the air. Mauvika turned to Capitano, her eyes narrowing slightly, sensing the change.

"You feel it, don't you?" she asked, her voice low, almost a whisper.

Capitano paused, his hand instinctively reaching for the hilt of his sword. He had spent so many years in service to the Fatui that he had learned to recognize when things were about to shift. "Something's wrong," he muttered, his voice thick with an unease he couldn't shake.

Before Mauvika could respond, the air shimmered with a sudden, sharp heat. From the ashes of the fire in the distance, a figure emerged—a messenger from the Fatui, cloaked in the colors of Snezhnaya. He walked toward Capitano with purpose, his footsteps carrying the weight of a command.

"Capitano," the messenger said, bowing slightly. "You are needed. The Tsarista has decided to act. The Fatui demands your immediate return."

Capitano's chest tightened. His gaze shifted back to Mauvika, who stood with her arms crossed, her fiery eyes burning with an unspoken question.

"The Tsarista… against the Heavenly Principles?" Capitano asked, though he already knew the answer.

The messenger nodded grimly. "The Tsarista has made a decision. The Fatui's interests are shifting, and you are required to return to Snezhnaya immediately. This is not a request, Capitano."

Mauvika's eyes flickered with a storm of emotions. She had always known that Capitano was tied to the Fatui, but the truth of it, the weight of it, hit her now in a way it never had before.

"And what of me?" she asked, her voice a mix of anger and hurt. "What of us?"

Capitano's heart ached at the question, but he knew the answer. He was bound to his duty, his allegiance to the Fatui. The very thing that had brought him to Natlan, the thing that had opened his heart to this wild land and to her, was now the very thing pulling him away.

"I don't know," he said, his voice strained. "But I can't ignore this. The Fatui… they'll come for me if I don't obey. I swore an oath."

Mauvika's gaze softened for just a moment, her fiery spirit burning with the intensity of her emotions. "And what about your heart, Capitano? Have you sworn an oath to that, too?"

The words stung him, but they were true. He had left his heart behind long ago, buried beneath the weight of his responsibilities and duties. But here, in Natlan, among the flames and the freedom, he had started to feel something he hadn't allowed himself in years: hope.

"I don't know what's left of it," he whispered, looking away. "But I can't abandon everything I've worked for. Not now."

Mauvika stood in silence, the weight of her own decisions pressing against her chest. She had lived her life without chains, without anyone telling her what to do. The idea of someone, anyone, controlling Capitano, made her blood burn with frustration.

"So, that's it then?" she said finally, her voice firm despite the crack of emotion in it. "You're just going to leave?"

Capitano met her gaze, his heart heavy with the knowledge that he might never see her again. He stepped toward her, his hand trembling as he reached out to her. "Mauvika… I wish things were different. I wish I could stay."

She took a step back, the flames in her eyes burning fiercer than before. "Then don't go. You've found something here. We have found something here."

The messenger cleared his throat, his presence suddenly more oppressive, like a dark shadow over them. Capitano's hand fell slowly to his side, and he gave Mauvika a final, lingering look.

"I have to go," he said softly. "But know this… what I've learned here, with you, will never leave me."

Mauvika's eyes burned with emotion, but she didn't say another word. She didn't need to. In that moment, she knew what he had to do, and what she had to accept.

Capitano turned to the messenger, nodding once. "Lead the way."

As they walked away, the fiery winds of Natlan swirled behind them, carrying with them the echoes of a love that had never truly been given a chance to bloom.
