Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 – The Truth Awaits

The moment they stepped through the doorway, the air changed.

It wasn't cold. It wasn't hot. It wasn't even heavy. It was… still.

The world beyond the cliffs was a world of silence.

It was a place that shouldn't exist.

The moment Ren crossed the threshold, he felt it—a pull, deep in his chest, something ancient, something old. The mark on his hand flared brighter, like it was reacting to the very air around them. He looked back at Sora and Hina. Both of them were tense, their eyes scanning the strange landscape that stretched before them.

It wasn't like anything Ren had ever seen. The ground beneath their feet was cracked, the sky above dark but strangely clear, and there were structures—ruins—that looked as though they had been here for centuries. Huge stone pillars, twisted trees with branches like claws, and a distant mountain with an ever-shifting shadow. It felt wrong, like the world here wasn't meant to exist in the same way as the world they knew.

Hina moved forward, her steps slow but certain. "This place… It's the heart of the Third Step. The place where everything begins."

"Begins?" Sora asked, her voice tight with uncertainty. "But where's the—?"

Before she could finish, the ground beneath their feet trembled.

Ren's heart skipped a beat. "What's happening?"

The world shook.

Not just the ground.

The air. The sky. The ruins around them. It all shifted.

A deep rumbling sound echoed from the heart of the land.

Then, from the shadows, something moved.

---

It was a figure, humanoid in shape but covered in dark, swirling energy. It stood at the far end of the ruins, watching them. Its eyes were a glowing red, and the very air around it seemed to twist in its presence.

Ren stepped forward, his instincts screaming at him to turn back, to run, to do anything other than face this creature. But his mark burned hotter than ever. He couldn't turn back. He couldn't leave. He had come too far.

"What is that?" Sora asked, her voice barely a whisper.

"That," Hina said, her tone colder than Ren had ever heard it, "is the guardian of this place. The one who tests those who seek the truth of the Third Step."

Ren's grip on his hand tightened. "A test?"

"Yes," Hina said. "But not just any test. This is a trial by darkness. The creature before us is not something we can fight or defeat in the usual way."

The figure in the distance took a step forward, and the ground cracked beneath its feet. "You are not worthy," it growled, its voice low and guttural. "You cannot face the truth. None can."

Ren's heart pounded. He wasn't sure what it was about the creature, but he could feel it—the weight of ages pressing down on him, the truth it guarded, and the danger that came with it.

The creature's eyes locked onto Ren. "You… You bear the mark."

Ren's pulse quickened. "What does that mean?"

The creature took another step forward. "It means you are the one. The one who will either save or destroy."

The air around them grew thick with energy, and the ground began to shift again. A massive wall of darkness began to rise between them and the creature, a force so intense that Ren could feel it pulling at his very soul.

Hina stepped forward, her mark blazing with light. "We can't fight this with power. We have to face it with our minds."

Ren frowned, confused. "What do you mean?"

Hina turned to him, her eyes filled with a quiet intensity. "The test is a trial of will. The creature before us is not just an enemy. It is a reflection of our fears, our doubts, our very souls."

Ren's breath caught in his throat. "You mean… we have to face ourselves?"

"Yes," Hina said, nodding. "But this is no simple trial. The creature is powerful. It can twist the truth, make us believe lies. We can't let it."

---

The darkness that surrounded them pulsed like a living thing.

Ren could feel it trying to take root in his mind, clouding his thoughts, whispering doubts into his ears. His mark burned fiercely, pushing back against the growing darkness. The creature's eyes glowed brighter, its figure becoming more and more distorted, like it was a reflection of something deeply wrong.

The creature spoke again, its voice a twisted mockery of the world they knew. "You are not worthy of the truth. The Third Step is not for you. You will fail. You will fall."

Ren's heart thudded in his chest. The darkness pressed closer, wrapping around his thoughts like chains.

But then, a voice cut through the fog.

It was Sora.

"I'm not afraid," she said, her voice steady and strong. "We've made it this far, and we're not turning back. We face this together."

Sora's words shattered the darkness like glass.

For a moment, Ren saw her clearly. She wasn't just his classmate, his friend. She was a part of something bigger, something more powerful than he could fully comprehend. Her mark, like his, flared with light.

The darkness recoiled.

Hina stepped forward too, her mark blazing even brighter. "The test isn't about strength. It's about standing together, facing what we fear, and not letting it control us."

Ren felt a sudden surge of power. He wasn't alone. He wasn't just fighting for himself. He had Sora. He had Hina.

He had them.

---

The creature roared, its form shifting violently as if the very act of defying it was making it unravel.

"You cannot win," it bellowed, its voice filled with rage. "You are nothing!"

But Ren stood firm. "I am something," he said, his voice stronger than it had ever been before. "And together, we can face this. We will see the truth."

The darkness shattered.

The creature screamed as the light from their marks tore through it, ripping it apart like paper.

And then, just as suddenly as it had appeared, the creature was gone.

The ruins around them began to fade, and the silence returned. The oppressive weight lifted, replaced with a sense of calm.

---

They were standing at the edge of the Third Step.

In front of them, a door of light opened.

The truth.

It was waiting.

Ren looked back at Sora and Hina. "Are we ready?"

Sora nodded, her eyes fierce with determination. "We came this far. We face whatever's next together."

Hina, her expression calm yet filled with resolve, added, "There is no turning back now."

Ren stepped forward. The door opened wider.

The truth was waiting.

And he was ready to face it.
