When they reached the spot where the goblins lay dead, they stopped. Both of them looked at the bodies for but a second before Fenrir moved forwards.
Fenrir, without any hesitation, started tearing off their ears. Felix's face scrunched up in disgust at the crunching sound. It sounded like cartilage crunching.
Fenrir looked back and smirked. "Baby", he said mockingly.
"I might vomit", Felix said simply, ignoring the insult. He was also like this in his previous life. He had hated even touching raw meat.
After Fenrir had torn both ears off of each of the bodies, he stood up and turned back towards Felix. "That should be that, now let's get that cash!" He said excitedly.
With that the both of them started heading towards the city.
"... Thanks for helping me with this", Felix said appreciatively. He would have definitely gotten mauled if he were out here alone.
Fenrir looked over at him, bloodied ears bundled up in his arms. "Yeah man, no problem. You would've done the same for me so I gotta return the favor!" He said casually, as if what he said was common sense.
This had a deep effect on Felix. He had always yearned for this type of friendship, based on equality. One in which he could be sure that he would be treated in the same way he treated the other.
The rest of the walk was silent, but not awkward.
…
The doors to the guild branch opened. A few members who were lounging about looked over and saw two beast kin children walk in with confidence.
The one with wolf ears resting atop his head had goblin ears bundled up in his arms, the other with fox ears had a wicker basket filled with many herbs.
They walked up to the main desk, and Fenrir dumped the ears on it, right Infront of the woman that had talked with them earlier, the one with the blue tabard.
"Goblin extermination quest, complete!" Fenrir exclaimed excitedly. This was like a dream come true, he had always fantasized about being in an adventurers guild, fighting monsters and all that.
The woman just stared discontentedly. "... You could've waited for me to put down a sheet".
"...Sorry"
"It's okay, it's not like I'm busy, I'll just clean it up", she responded sarcastically.
Without waiting for a response, she put in some gloves and counted the ears. "Six goblins only?" She questioned.
"Well, there were more but we didn't want to go back to get their ears", Fenrir elaborated
"Why?"
"Because they got taken out by one of those super aggressive deer things and we didn't want to test our luck a second time"
"You wandered into cresthorn territory?" She questioned dumbfoundedly.
"...Yeah?"
"... Don't do that again. You're lucky it got distracted, those things can tear through knight armor, and they're fast ", she warned and explained.
""Yes ma'am"", said said Fenrir along with Felix who finally decided to speak.
Then the guild woman-helper-accountant… 'receptionist!' Fenrir thought, reaching the correct word.
The guild receptionist then sighed, and went to the back to get their payment.
While they waited for her, Fenrir and Felix talked.
"With the money we get spring water, then what?" Fenrir questioned.
"We need copper and three more of the flowers", Felix reminded Fenrir. After that, he would also become magic like his friend.
But wasn't he already magic? He had fox ears on his head. That alone was pretty magical.
As soon as that string of thought ended, the receptionist came back and handed them two silver.
"... That's only two silver Miss…", Felix paused, realizing he didn't know her name. "Carla, and yes. Only two".
Felix looked over at his friend and he could already see a snarl forming. Before he could start yelling, Felix intervened.
"Could I ask why we're being underpaid?"
"Because you both aren't official members of the guild. The fee for membership is one silver, so I took the liberty of drafting up membership documents for the two of you", she explained politely. She then slid forward two forms.
They obviously read it over twice. It was a pretty standard document, asking their name, age, affiliation, nationality and all that.
Both beast kin glanced over at each other. Felix then nodded, signalling to his friend that it wasn't a bad idea to sign.
"Could we have pens or quills?" Felix asked.
"No need–" she said as put forward two needles. "prick your thumb and sign here", she said tapping at the bottom of one of the documents.
Fenrir picked up the needle and pricked his thumb, signing the document. A small blue light emanated from the document as all the information filled in by itself.
Name: Fenrir
Age: 15
Class: Water Mage
Nationality: Rolarian
Race: Wolf Kin
The rest of it was useless jargon. Carla read it over once, her eyes widening.
"You're a water mage!?" She exclaimed silently enough so that the others in the building wouldn't hear.
"Cool right?" Fenrir answered cockily.
"How lucky, being blessed by a god is very rare. Do you know any spells?" She questioned, pulling out a separate page, this time with a quill.
"Uh, yeah, one", he said. "And its name?" She questioned. "Tides Edge", Fenrir responded. "Offensive type spell?" She asked for further elaboration. "Yes", Fenrir replied.
With that conversation ending, Fenrir tossed a satisfied look towards Felix, who was avoiding eye contact.
"What's up?" Fenrir asked.
What was up is that Felix had an irrational fear of needles. He often passed out when his blood was drawn.
"Nothing", Felix replied, looking normal by all means.
"Alright, sign your doc so we can leave"
"... Yeah", Felix said, looking at the dreadful needle in his hand.
He then inhaled deeply, poking at his thumb. Instead of pushing it in, he twisted it. A single drop of blood dripped from the digit. He then, signed his form.
The same slight blue light emanated and filled up his document with the information.
Name: Felix
Age: 15
Class: Unblessed
Nationality: Rolarian
Race: Fox Kin
"Oh, unblessed", Carla said, looking over at Felix. "Don't feel too disappointed, most adventurers are unblessed. If you train hard enough, you can get to C-Rank", she explained.
"C-Rank?" Fenrir questioned.
"Yes, it's a class of adventurers. Each adventurer is placed into a class corresponding with their abilities and skill, so that we can distribute missions more efficiently.
It goes from rank E to Rank A. Ranks S and SS are reserved for exceptional people", she explained.
"Cool", Felix responded. "What are our ranks?"
"I'm placing the wolf boy into D rank and you into E", she replied.
"Hah!" Fenrir laughed.
Felix just deadpanned.
With that, they left the guild. Now, it was time to find some spring water. Then maybe hopefully copper.
