Chapter 12 - 12. The shadow returned

That morning, the sun had not yet fully risen when Leana awoke. Revan's arms were still wrapped around her waist, his breathing steady and peaceful. Sean was still sound asleep in his crib. Leana gently stroked Revan's hair, feeling a calm she hadn't known in a long time. But for some reason, her heart was restless. Something felt unfinished. Something was waiting at the threshold.

And it truly came.

Around nine in the morning, the doorbell rang. Revan was with Sean, watching the baby play, while Leana was still tidying up the bed. She went down first, wiping her hands with a towel as she opened the door.

Standing there was a woman who looked to be in her early forties. Her hair was neatly tied back, her face cold and composed. There was something both unfamiliar and strangely familiar in her eyes.

"Good morning," she greeted. "I'm looking for Mr. Revan Rayder."

Leana frowned. "And you are?"

The woman exhaled softly. "My name is Dr. Amanda Surya. I'm Maria's private doctor, and also someone she trusted."

Leana froze. That name, Maria struck her like a slap to the face. Before she could respond, Revan appeared behind her, holding Sean in his arms.

"Amanda?" Revan's face showed surprise, which quickly turned to tension. "Why are you here?"

Amanda looked at Revan with a complicated gaze. "Because I've been silent for too long. Because there's something important you need to know, about Maria, about Sean, and about who truly threatened your wife's life before she died."

Leana turned to Revan, confused and concerned. "What does she mean, Revan?"

Revan bit his lip. "Come in, Amanda. Let's talk inside."

A few moments later

Amanda sat in the living room with a cup of warm tea in her hands. Leana sat beside Revan, while Sean played in her lap.

"I know my visit is unexpected," Amanda began. "But before Maria passed, she wrote something for Revan. A letter I never got the chance to send because I was afraid. Afraid of what was written in it."

She reached into her bag and took out a small ivory-colored envelope. On the front, in Maria's handwriting, it read: For Revan, if I never get to say this myself.

Revan took it with trembling hands. But before he could open it, Amanda added, "And one more thing. Sean may not be your biological son."

The world seemed to stop turning.

"What?" Leana could hardly believe what she had just heard.

Revan froze. "You're joking, right?"

Amanda shook her head slowly. "Maria got pregnant shortly after a business trip abroad. At that time, her relationship with you was strained. I can't be completely sure, because Maria never revealed the father's identity. But she once mentioned a name … Dion."

Leana gasped. That name once again pierced her heart like a blade.

"No," she whispered.

Revan tore the envelope open in a panic, his eyes scanning each line of the letter rapidly. Silence filled the room until he finally closed the letter and lowered his head.

"She said she loved me, but she wasn't sure who Sean's biological father was. And she chose to remain silent. She apologized for making me a father to a child who might not share my blood."

Tears slid down Revan's cheeks. Leana reached for his hand, gripping it tightly.

"So what now?" Leana asked quietly.

Amanda pulled out one final item from her bag: an unopened DNA test result. "Maria asked me to do this in secret. But she died before she could receive the results. Now, it belongs to you."

Revan took the document but didn't open it right away.

"Revan," Leana said softly. "Whatever the result, you are still Sean's father. He doesn't need blood … he needs love. And that's what you've given him."

Revan turned to her, looking into her eyes. "If you stay with me, I can face anything."

Leana nodded. But deep inside, another storm was building. If Sean really was Dion's son, then this story wasn't over. It might just be beginning.

"I don't care who his biological father is," Revan said hoarsely. "All I care about is that he's mine. My heart tells me so."

Leana squeezed Revan's hand, trying to lend him strength. But within her own heart, a fear stirred. If Sean truly belonged to Dion, then where was that man now? Why hadn't he shown up after all this?

Revan slowly opened the folder. His eyes scanned the document line by line. His face didn't show much, but his breath hitched. He set the paper down on the table.

"No match," he said quietly. "Sean is not my biological son."

Silence enveloped them. Leana looked at Sean, still sleeping peacefully, and her chest ached. Not from disappointment, but from the knowledge that the storm was far from over.

"I'll still raise him," Revan said. "Nothing changes."

Amanda nodded. "I believe you, Revan. But you also need to know, I don't believe Maria's death was just an accident. Before she died, she said someone was following her. And she was afraid."

Revan and Leana looked at each other.

"You're sure?" Revan asked tensely.

Amanda nodded firmly. "And I think Dion might know more than he's let on."

They all fell silent, each trapped in their own thoughts. Could it be true? How could it? The doctor at the hospital had explained Maria died a day after giving birth. Though the baby was premature, he had been born healthy, healthier than his mother. Revan's head throbbed. How deep did this go?

"Amanda, if I need your help, will you be there?" Revan asked suddenly.

"Of course. I'll help whenever I can, Revan. At the very least, Sean has a mother now, I'm relieved," Amanda said, glancing at Leana who was still close beside Revan. She gave a small smile. Revan seemed so alive now.

"Thank you. And if Maria ever left anything else with you, please don't hesitate to tell me," Revan said.

"I will. But I hope you stay cautious, Revan. Because from what Maria said, the real danger may not have come from Dion, but from someone else."

That additional revelation made their heads spin. How much more did they need to learn? How many secrets were still buried? Not only secrets about Maria, for Leana, even Revan's past was just as complicated. And that left her unsure of what to prioritize.

"I have to go, Revan," Amanda said.

"Of course. Thank you for coming, Amanda," Revan replied, rising to his feet.

Leana stood too.

Amanda approached Sean first, saying goodbye and promising to visit again. She whispered blessings and kind wishes to the little boy, who had no idea his life had become a game in someone else's hands.

"See you again. If you need anything, come to me," Amanda said, gently touching Leana's arm.

"Okay," Revan replied, and Amanda left.

Back inside the house, Leana and Revan were silent, their mi

nds tangled with questions. Could they piece the puzzle together and finally uncover what had really happened?
