Chapter 20 - chapter 17 "Fading Consciousness"

The light is dim… no place, no time… only the void.

I open my eyes—or perhaps it's just a feeling.

No body. No echo of breath. No sense of weight or warmth.

I knew this would happen eventually… but…

A slow sigh escapes.

On the other hand… I suppose I deserve this end.

After all, I was never truly a good person.

She drifts through the air, her gaze vacant.

"Villains always get a bad ending."

A faint, bitter laugh slips out as she looks at her semi-transparent hand.

"This time I have a half-transparent body…

Does that mean my original body is gone?"

She sees her reflection in the surface of the water—a foggy image distorted by her ghostlike form.

Pale skin, black wavy hair dancing like smoke,

And her eyes… gray-blue, like a clouded sky.

"So… this is what I looked like."

She drifted in the void, lost, unsure how much time had passed. An hour? A day? More?

Then, in a single moment…

She stops.

She sees him.

Rain.

He was walking near the edge of the island, his steps slow, his eyes distant—

As if something was missing… as if he was searching for her.

She rushes toward him, her heart—or what's left of it—pounding with a desperate longing to touch him, to say something… anything.

She reaches out.

But her hand passes through him.

A gasp—silent.

She tries again, with both hands, as if to embrace him…

…But it's meaningless.

She slips through him again, like a ghost, a mirage.

She freezes, her eyes trembling, lips quivering.

Is this my fate?

To be this close… and still not touch you?

To watch you search for me… yet never hear me?

I can't even tell you I'm here!

She lowers her gaze to her transparent hands…

"Even this… wasn't meant for me."

She lifts her hands again, this time slowly, trembling faintly, and gently circles them around his neck—

As if to hold him from behind… without touching him.

Nothing. No warmth, no reaction.

She leans her face close to his neck, closes her eyes, and whispers a voice no one can hear:

"At least… I can still see you."

A sorrowful smile touches her lips, and a long, fading look settles in her eyes as she whispers deep within:

"Even if you can't see me anymore… even if you've begun to forget me…

It's okay.

This… is enough for me."
