Chapter 1 - Lucan

To start this off this is a character backstory for DnD and was convinced to upload here so please enjoy.

Lucan's life started out as a very simple life he was born to a priestess of Helm and was raised in the monastery. He spent his early childhood studying the books and the scrolls of Helm. It was not until he hit early teen years that he was told he was actually an aasimar and of celestial birth and that his father was actually an "Angel". At this age he gave up his studying of Helm and the ways of being a priest. Except for one fact he found a way to find out who his true father was.

Lucan found this old scroll with a spell that could give him contact with a dead relative of his choosing for 1 hour. This would allow Lucan to question his father and find out why he was not around.

Lucan got everything he needed for this spell or summoning, very simple but very powerful spell. Lucan spent a good part of a year in his 15th year searching for all these things needed. For his 16th birthday everything was lined up and so he decided that would be the day he would talk to his father and come into his adulthood. He started that morning off extremely early taking off to his little tree fort if you could call it that in the woods where he had everything set up. He layed out the runes in the dirt and put the necessary ingredients in the order the incantation called for and in the center of the runes was the last thing he needed was a drop of his own blood.

With one quick poke to the tip of his finger and a small drop of blood to the center of the runes patterns. He sat there anxiously waiting for what felt like a lifetime but nothing happened and there was nothing but silence. Lucan was confused and quickly went back to the writings for the incantations that was written in celestial which he is new too and self taught as he can make little sense of it and thats more then those around him. "Blood of the caster" was such a loose description that Lucan had assumed it was only a small amount. With a pause and thought of how to explain a gash on the palm of his hand to his mother he took up his little dagger and dragged it across his palm. The blood had gushed out of his hand and formed a puddle in the center of the runes. In a matter of seconds of it settling the runes started to glow in the circle and get brighter to the point of making Lucan flinch in pain as it felt his eyes were being burnt from their sockets. Lucan heard nothing but upon opening his eyes he could see the blood had flowed from the center of the circle and had created what looked to be veins that stretched to each of the runes. The blood wasn't red anymore but more of a white light with streaks of red flowing through it.

After realizing this was it that his incantation was working it took everything in Lucan to slow his heart and his thinking to simply mutter a single name "Rideon". As Lucan says the name an explosion of force blows apart his little fort in the woods and blows him back into a nearby tree knocking him unconscious. Lucan woke quickly afterwards to the voice of a man he had never met before but had only heard of.

"Wake up boy." the voice proclaimed in a radiant way that seemed to echo through the forest. Causing the birds to all go airborne in the distance. Lucan opened his eyes with his head pounding from the thud of smacking the tree. Lucan quickly got his wits about him and stood up straight almost as if he was picked up by Helm himself.

"Don't just stand there and stare at me boy. Why have you brought me to this dirty place? What is it that you want?" Again the voice echoed through the forest causing more of the wildlife to flee in fear.

"Rideon?" Lucan mumbled as that was the only thing he could do as he was still fighting to fill his lungs with air.

"Yes that is my name of course that is what you said to bring me here." the man said in confusion as he noticed this boy is just a boy barely of age.

"You came to my monastery 15 years ago or well I guess it would be over 16 years ago now." Lucan finally got his lungs filled with air and to prove he was a man and not a boy held some of that air in his lungs.

"And what does that matter to you boy? I have visited many monasteries in my life as that's what happens when you mortals summon us. Now get on with it." As Rideon says this he starts to get a little irritated that such obvious statements are a waste of time.

"Have you ever thought of your choices when you visit the monastery or do you not care what happens?" Lucan now steps towards this figure and observes the being although his eyes feel a slight burn he also feels his eyes are starting to get use to the light as if he is just looking out on a sunny day.

"Why would I worry myself with such small matters as my visits to these mortal planes? What does that matter to you?" He replies as this "boy" is now walking circles around him and looking him over up and down.

"Have you ever thought that some of your "visits" would result in, well I don't know another life coming around?" Lucan now has a bit of anger in his voice.

"Well I suppose not as it is a very rare thing for a celestial to impregnate a mortal woman as the birth would, Well usually kill the woman and the child." Rideon now has a look of confusion on his face.

"Well I survived and so did my mother." Lucan stated with so much passion that he could hear his own voice echo through the forest and startled himself. Also noticing that Rideon now was staring at him in awe and observing him with great detail and casting what seemed to be simple incantations and spells to see something inside himself or inside Lucan.

"Who was your mother boy?" Rideon asked in a soft and somewhat concerning voice.

"Sothene." Lucan says through his teeth as his fists clench. How could this guy be his father as he can't even remember his mother, has he "visited" that many monasteries?

"Sothene? Sothene?" Rideon taps his chin as he tries to remember the name and his experience. "Ah yes Sothene i remember her, Good looking mortal woman if you ask me. But anyways yes she summoned me oh roughly 16 or 17 years ago and asked me to plant a seed in her belly as she and her husband of the time could not have children and it displeased her husband. So that's what I did." He says with a smile on his face.

"She was married?" Lucan now completely lost in confusion once again.

"Well she was until he walked into the room as I was plowing her and planting a seed as she asked."

"What do you mean she was? What did you do?"

"Well boy he attacked me and tried to kill your mother so I, Well i made him disappear and well go to a place where he couldn't hurt your mother and he wouldn't be able to father any children."

This all went back and forth for some time and Rideon finally realized he was looking upon his son who was coming of age. Lucan asked what it meant to be and aasimar and what was to be his life now that he was considered celestial.

"Well boy all you can do is live your life to the fullest you will live much longer then the mortals, but you can bare children like any mortal but you have celestial blood and with that comes some power." As Rideon explained what was now available to Lucan and explained the history of the Aasimars history and what they stood for Lucan could feel his celestial power and could understand it more and feel it's source.

As the incantation started to wear off and die they said their goodbyes and Rideon stated he would be watching Lucan and his developments.

The sun was still low in the sky this morning. Lucan looked over where his fort use to be and seeing the scattered ruins of his younger years he felt this was a good start to say goodbye to his old life and start to embrace the Aasimar side. The walk back felt like forever as Lucan was fighting within himself and trying to figure out what to do next and how to even start following this new lifestyle. As Lucan returned to the monastery he found his mother at home just finished cooking breakfast and setting the table.

Lucan would spend the next 15 years of his life training with the monastery in the ways of a paladin. Lucan knew what he must do and knew what the call of the Aasimar is and to protect the monastery and his mother he trained day and night to become the best he could and do what Helm stands for and that is to Protect.

Lucan finished his training and became a full sworn member of the Vigilant Eyes of the God. Helm's order of paladins that were tasked with traveling the lands and serving with selfless and humble acts for the followers of helm. A few days before he was meant to leave to group up with his fellow paladins and start his quest there was a Holy Vigil ceremony that was happening to promote one of the priests that was to accompany Lucan in his travel to meet the Order. As the celebrations went on and the people of the monastery were playing games and dancing and feasting was ongoing. Lucan could feel something out there in the monastery walls but could not tell what it was. But it almost felt as if he was being watched and he kept getting small glimpses of what looked to be eyeballs in the walls and the paintings seemed like their eyes were following people as they danced and sang. Lucan passed it off as his nerves as tomorrow morning he was to start out to meet his order.

Later in the evening as the sun was setting everyone at the monastery was in the center on their knees praying for the safe travels of Lucan and the others that were going to be set out in the morning. There was a heavy fog of darkness that blocked out the last bit of sunlight set down on the monastery from above and moved in almost like a fog but not horizontally like fog has in the past but straight down and suffocated the light out of place. Lucan wasn't the first to spot it as the head priest standing at the front and saying the prayer stopped in the middle of prayer and stood there staring to the back of the courtyard of the complex in absolute terror. Lucan did not even have to turn and look behind him as he could sense what was there and knew the nature of what was causing the priest to be in absolute fear.

"GUARDS!" The priest screamed as he was lifted into the air by something that was unnatural as his body went lifeless and limp. The priest's body started to convulse and twist and expand as everyone there looked up at him and the body exploded in a cloud of blood spraying out over the crowd. As the crowd was covered in blood and started to run for the exits.

The exits to the complex were quickly cut off as Demon's swarmed the exits cutting down anyone trying to leave this place. Lucan was snapped out of his panic by his mother slapping him and dragging him to their little room in the back wall of the monastery. Sothene began digging through the rooms and finding her son's armor and shield and sword and throwing it at him telling him to put it on and be ready as they will have to fight their way out of this place. Lucan was still covered in the blood of the priest quickly but quietly donned his armor and fitted his shield. But could not get the shake and fear to leave him.

Outside in the complex Lucan could hear the screams of the people left out there and the laughter of the demons that lay the slaughter. Sothene finished gathering some supplies for after they made it out of this place. And staged it near the door but stood behind Lucan spell book in hand and a spell ready. They heard hooves and quick clawed steps running around outside and the stabs of bodies every so often. Out of the silence they heard a man's voice boom through the complex and echo through the walls causing the tables and kitchen ware to shake.

"He is saying a spell." Sothrene stated in a whisper. "Be ready son as we may meet Helm today.

Lucan dug in with his feet and strengthened his grasp on his sword and shield. Preparing to fight to protect his mother even if it was to get her free at the cost of his life. But nothing happened. The echo of this man's voice stopped and the complex filled with footsteps. Sluggish footsteps but they were footsteps nonetheless. They were marching out of the complex as the footsteps left the area and got further away and slipped off into the distance leaving nothing but silence in the complex. Sothrene and Lucan stayed in position for a few minutes not moving and breathing very shallow as to try and listen for any noise.

"I think it's over Lucan. I think they're gone." She stated this as she lowered her book and her hand and slowly approached the door. As she started to reach for the handle making eye contact with Lucan they nodded to each other as she quickly grabbed the door and jerked it open towards her.

"AAAAHHHHH!" Lucan screamed as he charged the door ready to fight anything there and ready to throw down his life for his mother. But it was all for nothing as the courtyard was empty. There was nothing other than blood and a few limbs of the people who lived there. It was empty. "Where did they all go? This courtyard was full of people and now there all gone? Leaving nothing but blood and limbs behind."

"I was correct that was a spell. That voice reanimated the dead and is now marching them to there next target."

"We have to stop them, we have to catch up to them so we can lay our friends and family to rest. How else will they go to Helm?" Lucan stammered looking at the courtyard where people were just feasting and dancing. The cups are now all full of blood the food is all over the ground. This was an absolute slaughter leaving no one but Lucan and Sothrene.

"We must leave this place now as there will be lower leveled demons and robbers following behind them to clean up and claim the riches of this place."

Lucan and Sothrene both grabbed there packs and walked around the monastery gathering what little food that was untouched by the blood and still clean filling there bags with rations. "Ok mother I got all the food i could find and I am ready to leave, but shouldn't we say a prayer before we do?"

"No, we must leave now Lucan. We can say a prayer when we make it to the village and warn the nobles."

"Ok then let's go" Lucan stammered as he started to walk toward the main gates. Sothrene following him Lucan stopped to take one more look in on the courtyard with tears finally falling from his eyes and running down his face. But something was different when he looked back he could sense something new and could sense something that wasn't there moments ago. He could almost see it and see that it was moving towards them. He scanned the area as he prepared for this thing to show itself. But nothing showed all he could hear was the thunk of steel hitting flesh, Lucan turned to see his mother impaled in the stomach by what looked like a tail. A red tail that was attached to something that was red and stood taller than Lucan causing him to look up to see this thing's face. As he looked upon the face of this monster and saw the smile, He could feel the rage building inside him seeing his mother being slain. He felt a warmth inside him and it took over.

Lucan lost control of his body and felt as though all he could do was watch what happened next. His eyes widened, his mouth gaped open, and his arms shot out as the warmth inside him in what felt like an explosion a bright light shot out from him. The monster screamed in pain and terror much like the priest did earlier it threw up its arms to shield its eyes, as it did so Lucan thrusted his sword true and as it struck the demon there was a bright light out of his sword too causing the body of this demon to burst into flames and disintegrate where it stood. Lucran had killed his first demon.

"Mother." Lucan said in a panic as he crouched down and tried to cover the wound in her stomach and using the spell he learned through being a paladin but it wasn't working. He was powerless and could not heal his mother.

"Lucan look at me… I am going to die here but i am going to be with your father now we will look after you… But i will also be here to fight beside you…" Sothrene reached out for her book and scrambled through the pages looking for a spell.

"No you cannot die here… I need you mother. I… I need you" Lucan stammered through his words as he tried and tried again with his healing spells.

"Lucan stop… you are simply wasting your energy… look" Sothrene points at a page "Hold your sword to my chest… and read this out loud."

Lucan looks down at this page his mother is pointing at and it is a spell to tie a soul to an item. "No i can't do that you are suppose to stay with me"

"I will always be here… now do what I told you… quickly before my life source leaves me completely…" Lucan quickly does as he is told he sets the sword against his mothers chest and reads the cantrip through his tears. The sword starts to glow again as he watches he can see the soul of his mother slowly seeping out of her chest and into the sword. The sword starts to grow and shimmer, the blade becoming longer and sharp on both sides instead of a single side the hilt begins to lengthen and stretch to fit Lucan's hand with an entirely new comfortability. The blade now around 4 and half foot long starting out skinny but pointing outwards half way through then finally coming to a point at the end. As Lucan stood up staring at this sword in complete confusion and awe struck, he could feel the power inside this sword as he could feel his mothers power inside the sword making it stronger.

"Lucan? Can you hear me?" Lucan heard in his head as he couldn't believe it and looked around for his mother, knowing she was laying in front of him lifeless.

"Mother?" Lucan replied, talking out loud in his confusion.

"Shhhh dont talk i can hear your thoughts. So just think about it and I can hear it." She states as Lucan quickly looks around realizing this is not the best time to talk but grabs up his bag and wipes the tears from his face and starts heading out to the village. He continues through the woods and avoids any roads as he makes his way but being a day's travel to the village and with everything that happened Lucan starts feeling exhausted and stops for the night.

"Lucan, you must continue and I will be here with you. But you do now have the strength to wield the power I bring to this sword and if you wield it in battle now you will die." Sothrene exclaims to Lucan in his thoughts. Lucan looked confused upon hearing this and held up the sword with confusion on his face. While looking at the sword it starts to glow again and starts to shake. As it starts shaking Lucan hears "I love you son and will always be here but you must get stronger" the last thing he hears as the sword shatters and the blade falls to pieces away from the handle.

Lucan in a panic begins scrambling to grab all the pieces "No. No. No this can't be happening. What did she mean by this?" Lucan stammers as he scrambles to grab all the shards of the sword holding them in his hand with tears streaming down his face in rivers.

Lucan continued to the village and warned the nobles holding the sword pieces in his bag never leaving it anywhere by itself. The nobles took him in as a soldier as they started to hunt this man and demons that slayed everyone at the monastery. Lucan continued to hunt these demons for the next 45 years of his life. Outliving most of his fellow soldiers and the noble that took him into the force to fight this demon.

Although hunting this demon he never got his revenge and never got close to killing this demon. As one night his unit is camping he returns to his tent to find a folded up piece of paper on his bed mat. Lucan takes the piece of paper and sets it off to the side as he takes the shards of his sword out of his bag and counts all the pieces to make sure they are all there. Before placing them under his pillow as he does everynight to keep them safe. Lucan wakes up early in the morning as he usually does and packs up his tent and bad mat and counts the sword pieces once again before putting them into his bag. But the piece of paper sat there on his bag. Lucan picks up the piece of paper and reads it as he reads the name at the end "The Weaver" the letter turns into the moths the letter told him to follow. Promising to give him everything he wants for a little bit of work. He looks at his bag and whispers "I will get those who attacked and I will get stronger for you mom" Lucan dones his bag and starts following the moths.

Lucan

Lucan's life started out as a very simple life he was born to a priestess of Helm and was raised in the monastery. He spent his early childhood studying the books and the scrolls of Helm.

"AAAAHHHHH!" Lucan screamed as he charged the door ready to fight anything there and ready to throw down his life for his mother. But it was all for nothing as the courtyard was empty.
