Chapter 8 - Through the Swarm

It was the first time Glenn had ever seen someone charge straight into a swarm of zombies. Even though they were in a vehicle, facing down dozens—maybe even hundreds—of undead was madness. Even a tank would run out of steam eventually.

"They're just a bunch of lunatics looking to die. Why waste time on them?"

Moore, who wasn't the type to interfere in other people's problems, yawned and turned to go back to sleep. He had no intention of going down to save anyone—especially not from hundreds of zombies. That was the kind of thing he wouldn't even dare to dream about.

"Did you see anything?"

Others had heard the commotion and made their way to the rooftop. A blonde woman, Andrea, took the telescope from Glenn and peered down at the growing crowd of zombies.

"Oh my god… Who are they? Look at all those guns!"

As Andrea spoke in shock, Jason and his group were already pulling weapons from the car below.

Puff, puff, puff. The muffled gunshots from their rifles—fitted with silencers—kept the noise level down, making it harder for distant zombies to zero in on them.

"We'll park in that alley and head up those stairs," Jason said calmly, pointing to a fire escape on the side of the building.

He had already mapped out their route. If they could get to that external stairwell and climb up, they'd be out of reach of the undead.

Even though Rick and the others didn't understand why Jason was so determined to get to this supermarket, they followed him without question—cutting down zombies as they made their way toward the stairs.

Watching from the roof, Glenn finally realized what they were trying to do. After a moment of hesitation, he made a decision. He believed the group's firepower might be their ticket out of the city.

"I'm going down to help them."

Glenn adjusted his cap, grabbed a baseball bat, and began climbing down the building's outer stairwell under the watchful eyes of the group above.

At the same time, Jason and his team had reached the stairs and started climbing. Just as they looked up, they saw Glenn coming down toward them.

He really looks just like he does on TV.

Jason smirked slightly. At this point in the story, Glenn was still just a cautious, ordinary courier. For him to take this kind of risk was honestly impressive.

"Hey guys, where are you from?" Glenn called out, gripping the bat tightly.

They met on a platform. Glenn stood there nervously with only a bat in hand, while Jason and the others were armed with rifles, which only made him more anxious.

Click.

Suddenly, Jason raised his rifle and pointed it directly at Glenn. Glenn froze. Even Rick and Morgan were caught off guard.

"Jason, what the—" Rick started, eyes wide, but Jason motioned for silence with a subtle hand gesture.

"You're pretty brave, coming down here like that."

Jason looked Glenn over, a faint smile playing on his lips. "You do know, in today's world, killing a person is no different than killing a zombie. Getting involved in someone else's business can get you killed."

"I…"

Glenn was terrified. He swallowed hard and stammered, "I—I didn't think you were bad people. And—and he's a cop!"

He quickly pointed to Rick. "I mean, who'd still wear that uniform if they didn't mean it?"

Glenn's hands were visibly shaking.

"You won't always be this lucky."

Jason lowered his weapon and tossed it to Morgan. Then he gently tapped Glenn on the shoulder and said, "Take us up. I know there are others up there."

"Okay…"

Glenn still wasn't sure whether Jason and his group were friends or foes, but he didn't have much choice. He led them to the rooftop to meet Andrea and the rest of his group.
