Chapter 17 - Awakening

Three days had passed since the escape. You, Ada, and Lia had taken shelter in an abandoned mansion tucked deep within the Carpathian Mountains. Snow fell softly outside, muffling the world in silence.

Inside, tension simmered.

Lia sat alone in the library, surrounded by dusty books and flickering candlelight. Her fingers hovered over a leather-bound journal left by a man named William Birkin. Pages filled with diagrams, gene sequences… and a name: Lia—written in the margins.

She called out, "Mom? Dad?"

You and Ada rushed in. Lia held the journal open, pointing to a strange sequence of numbers and letters glowing faintly on the page.

Ada's eyes narrowed. "That's... not ink."

You stepped closer. The symbols shimmered like bioluminescence. "It's responding to her."

Lia touched the page again—and everything around her shifted.

Books flew off the shelves. Candles burst into tall, silent flames. For a moment, her eyes glowed the same eerie violet hue Ada had seen in experimental test subjects—ones injected with a stable, rare form of the Nemesis strain.

But Lia wasn't unstable. She was... in control.

Ada pulled her back gently. "Lia, breathe."

The light faded. The room returned to normal.

Lia looked up, eyes wide but steady. "I saw things. A lab… a woman in red… and people calling me Project Genesis."

Ada's face turned pale. "They started it again," she whispered. "The Genesis Program was abandoned years ago. I destroyed the data myself."

You locked eyes with her. "Looks like someone rebuilt it—using our daughter."

Lia stepped between you both. "Then we end it. For good."

Ada looked at her, and for the first time in years, you saw something rare in Ada's eyes: hope.

"She's not a weapon," Ada said quietly. "She's the future."

You nodded. "And we're going to protect her—by burning Umbrella to the ground."

Outside, thunder rumbled. Far away, dark figures in black coats watched the mansion through thermal scopes.

But inside, a new storm was rising.

Her name was Lia.
