Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: The Draconic Sage

After slaying the Dragon Queen, Rein traveled further into the ancient lands of dragons, searching for anything that could help him in his mission. The Whispers of an ancient sage had reached his ears—an elder dragon who had once fought against the tyranny of the dragon lords. This sage would know about the source of the dragons' power and the truth behind their downfall.

It is then that Rein would find the sage inside an abandoned temple hidden beneath the mountains. The creature was ancient and most of its exteriors were covered with a multitude of scales that glittered like ethereal light. The beast neither belonged to the category of the dragon nor was a human. The spirit of its form kept liquidating and changing, but the eyes—those deep, infinite eyes—never changed.

"You seek the truth," the sage said, its voice echoing with wisdom. "But truths are like weapons, young warrior. They can cut as deeply as any sword."

Fair and consumed by his obsession, he now demanded what he thought were answers. "Tell me how to destroy them all. I will not stop until every dragon is dead."

He remained silent for a moment, taking Rein in, and then broke the stillness once again. "The dragons are not alone in their enmity, Rein. You walk a path that will consume you. The power you seek, the crystal you carry—do you think it is a gift? It is a curse, and you are its chosen vessel."

Rein's hands were shaking, but he was trying to control his anger. "I care nothing for curses or gifts. I care only for vengeance."

The sage's eyes grew dark at that. "Then you will be one with darkness. The more you kill, the less of yourself you will remain. You have already begun to lose your humanity, and the longer you cling to vengeance, the further you shall fall."

Rein stepped forward, unwilling to listen. "I will decide my own fate. Not you."

The sage's shape began to flicker and fade, but its final words echoed in Rein's mind: "Vengeance is a poison, and you are drinking it."
