Chapter 1: The Spark That Bites
——————
Location: Unknown Underground Facility – Midnight
The concrete hallway stank of metal and burned wires. Fluorescent lights flickered overhead, barely keeping up with the static charge now crawling along the ceiling. Somewhere far off, alarms began to whine.
A guard stood stiff at the entrance checkpoint, clipboard in hand.
"Name?" he asked without looking up.
A voice responded, calm and clear. "Kaiden."
The pen paused. "Last name?"
"Just Kaiden."
The guard raised an eyebrow. "Affiliation?"
"None."
There was a long silence.
"…Purpose of visit?"
Kaiden tilted his head, smile forming at the corners of his mouth. His hands were in his pockets, his stance relaxed, almost lazy.
"Heard someone strong was in this building," he said.
The guard finally looked up.
"So?"
Kaiden's smile widened. "Came to see if the rumors were true."
BZZT.
The lights above exploded in a spray of sparks. The clipboard snapped in half from the surge that shot through the desk. By the time the guard blinked, Kaiden was gone—nothing but a crackle of static left in his wake.

Elsewhere – Surveillance Room
"Security breach at Gate 3!"
"What now!? Pull the feed!"
"Cameras are down. Fried Badly!"
The technician's voice cracked in panic as the monitors blinked to black, one by one.
"Who the hell gets through Level 2 lightning insulation—!?"
"Sir, reports say… he's unregistered. We don't even have a power category for him."
A low hum buzzed through the control center before every monitor burst into static.

Back in the hallway…
Kaiden walked with the confidence of a man who didn't need to sneak. His footsteps echoed sharply in the now-silent facility. A glimmer of lightning rippled up his arm and danced across his shoulder.
He reached a steel door and didn't bother to check if it was locked. He simply tapped it with one finger.
CRACK.
It blew inward off its hinges.
Two awakeners stood on the other side, both uniformed, alert. One was tall and thin with razor-wire tattoos pulsing along his arms. The other was shorter, armored, already charging energy between her palms.
"This is a restricted zone," the tall one said. "State your business."
Kaiden didn't answer. He stared at them for a beat, then tilted his head again.
"Between the two of you," he asked, "who's stronger?"
The female awakener narrowed her eyes. "What?"
"I'm looking to warm up," Kaiden replied, cracking his neck to one side. "Don't want to overkill both of you right away."
They exchanged a look.
"Arrogant little—"
BZZT.
Kaiden vanished.
The woman didn't even have time to scream. A bolt of lightning crashed through the air, slamming into her chest and sending her flying into the far wall with a crash of stone and steel.
The male barely managed to react, he flicked his wrist, summoning razor-sharp energy threads from his fingertips. They lashed forward, slicing toward Kaiden's exposed side.
Too slow.
Kaiden dodged mid-air, twisted, and landed behind him. A snap of fingers. Another blast.
The second awakener crumpled, smoke rising from his back.
Kaiden exhaled, stretching his neck again. "Tch. Not even warm."

Sub-Level 5 – Observation Room
Unseen eyes were watching. A row of silhouettes stood behind tinted glass, gazing down at the wreckage Kaiden was leaving in his wake.
One of them, a man in a white coat, adjusted his glasses.
"So… he came."
Another figure crossed their arms. "Why now?"
"Because we let the rumors spread. And because he's addicted to fighting anyone stronger than him."
The scientist smirked.
"But the real question is…" he said. "What will he do when he reaches Subject Zero?"
---
Back in the corridors…
Kaiden kept moving.
His expression had cooled into mild boredom again. That fight? Barely a twitch. Not even worth the energy he used to dodge.
What a waste.
He turned a corner, eyes narrowing slightly as a new pressure rolled through the air.
Finally.
Someone, something, was waiting.
Kaiden stopped. He grinned.
Lightning crackled along his arms again, growing louder with each step forward.
"This better be good," he muttered. "I'm starting to feel disappointed."
