Chapter 6 - The Tariqa of Silence (The Order of Silence)

Here's the English translation of the text:

A short story set in the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Mehmed the Conqueror, generally revolving around a duruit (a mysterious sage who communes with nature spirits) and a shaman (a spirit traveler devoted to ancient Turkish beliefs):

Year: 1465 Location: Around the Belgrade Forest, outside of Istanbul

After Mehmed the Conqueror conquered Istanbul, it was believed that not only the walls but also the spiritual realm had been seized. However, in the ensuing silence, some strange news reached the palace, secretly recorded by one of the intelligence officers from the Enderun, who was a favorite of the Sultan. Meaningless whispers at night in the forest, luminous beings seen in the dreams of some soldiers, and a few missing travelers…

Due to these circumstances, a person was assigned: Duruit Elvan Hatun, originally from Rumelia, who had received Mevlevi training but knew older, deeper teachings about spirituality. It was said about her that "she would ask questions of the wind in the trees." According to rumor, she could speak with nature and attract animals.

While Elvan Hatun was investigating the forest, she encountered a shaman from the ancient Turkish lands one night. His name was Tura Han. He had come from the East, tracing the "Yel-Kut", one of the extinct spirits that had broken away from the Altai Mountains. This entity had been released when Istanbul's spiritual wounds deteriorated after its conquest. It was invisible but confused people's minds with its whispers.

The two travelers became both rivals and friends.

By listening to the sounds of the forest, Duruit Elvan found the hiding place of the Yel-Kut: an old pagan temple lock. Shaman Tura Han, on the other hand, divined from bones that an ancient "prayers to the Sky God" and the "Basmala" needed to be recited together for the spirit to be resealed. Those two beliefs, two worlds, united: the light of Islam and the shadows of Tengrism.

Finally, Elvan Hatun and Tura Han held an ancient ceremony to seal the spirit. The wind suddenly stopped, the animals fell silent. The roar of the Yel-Kut shook the sky, but in the end, the duo silenced both the whisper and respected each other.

Only this was sent to Mehmed:

"The spirit of the forest has softened. The voice in the shadows now whispers as if praying. Everything is silent. But beware, this silence is an agreement, not a victory."
