Today in class, Sorata didn't lay his head on the desk to sleep like usual. Instead, he was quietly reading a book titled Setting and Coloring Techniques for Anime Characters.
His purpose, of course, was to prepare for recreating the manga version of EVA. With that, he could earn a lot of money.
He had already submitted the first volume of Toradora! last night. He was confident the revised version, meticulously adapted to fit the current social environment, would be approved and published soon.
But Toradora! had its limitations. Its subject matter and content meant that even if it got an anime adaptation, it couldn't compare to the global influence of EVA. EVA's merchandise and licensing potential alone could solve all his future financial problems.
And more importantly, it was easy for him. Sorata simply wanted a peaceful life.
In just one class period, he had already finished the thick book thanks to his enhanced mental processing power, scanning through the entire thing like a computer. Now, he had a crystal-clear understanding of the do's and don'ts of manga illustration.
With his level nine ink wash mastery and precise control over drawing techniques, Sorata was confident he could recreate the EVA manga from memory and even surpass it in detail.
After all, the original artist Yoshiyuki Sadamoto didn't have level nine ink skills. From Sorata's perspective, the EVA manga's art was only average. In terms of pure skill, even Shiina Mashiro was better.
"Kanda, planning to join a club this year? You should come to the swimming club. Lots of beautiful girls,"
Miyahara Daichi leaned over from behind during the break, grinning widely.
"Club? Not interested," Sorata replied without lifting his eyes from the book.
Miyahara had expected that response and nodded knowingly. "Well, did you know we had a bunch of transfer students this year? Let me tell you something interesting."
He leaned closer, lowering his voice as if revealing a grand secret.
"Three god-tier beauties joined our school. Especially the one who became president of the newly formed Occult Research Club. Her name is Rias Gremory. Honestly, she's even more beautiful than your Shiina."
"Occult Research Club? Never heard of it," Sorata raised an eyebrow and looked at him skeptically.
"Heh. That's because it was just founded yesterday. You've either been napping or hanging out with Shiina all this time, so of course you didn't notice."
"The requirements to join are crazy though. Loads of people applied in the past two days, but not a single one got accepted. If I had a chance, I would've switched clubs already."
"What do you mean 'your Shiina'? Don't go spreading weird rumors," a voice cut in from the front.
Aoyama Nanami turned around with a frown. "You'll only cause trouble for Kanda-kun."
"It's not a rumor," Miyahara insisted. "Everyone's seen them walking to and from school together."
He turned to Sorata, eyes full of curiosity. "Come on, Kanda. Just tell her. Are you dating Shiina-san from the art department or not?"
Nanami looked at him now too, her eyes subtly tense, waiting for his response.
"Huh? Why would you think that?" Sorata was visibly confused. "We live in the Sakura Dormitory, and Shiina-san isn't exactly great at navigating daily life. She gets lost all the time, so Chihiro-sensei asked me to look after her. That's all."
Though in some ways, his relationship with Mashiro seemed closer than an average couple's, it was only because she needed someone to take care of her.
Unless she developed actual feelings one day, Sorata had no intention of crossing any lines. He saw Mashiro more like a dependent pet than a romantic interest.
He always did what he promised, so long as it didn't bring him unnecessary trouble.
"I see. What a shame," Miyahara sighed dramatically. "I thought Kanda had already landed the legendary Shiina from Suimei High."
Meanwhile, Nanami quietly exhaled a small breath of relief.
Before the conversation could continue, the bell rang, signaling the start of the next class.
That afternoon, Sorata went up to the rooftop as usual. He sat in the sunlight, eyes closed, not just resting but channeling his mental strength to refine the gene data of the Kryptonian bloodline.
The spring sun was already hot, almost like summer. Under that burning light, about ten percent of Sorata's body had already undergone transformation. Cells shimmered with faint golden energy, mutating at an astonishing rate.
After just three days, his body, which looked no different from any average high school student, now concealed monstrous strength.
He had already crossed into the first stage of transcendent life. His strength had reached over one thousand kilograms and was still rising rapidly.
This was the fearsome power of the Kryptonian bloodline.
Even a basic Kryptonian had steel-hard bodies, could fly at hypersonic speeds, and possessed tens of thousands of tons of force. The longer they were exposed to sunlight, the more terrifying they became, evolving into true cosmic beings.
By the time the final bell rang at three thirty, Sorata slowly opened his eyes, a faint crease on his brow.
"Still no progress. Maybe my approach is wrong."
He had experimented with dozens of different god-tier bloodlines that afternoon. No matter how he tried to simplify them, they wouldn't fuse with the core of the Kryptonian genetic chain.
"Maybe I don't need to use bloodlines of the same tier. What if I extract specific abilities from lower-ranked transcendent bloodlines and graft them into the Kryptonian framework instead?"
"Whatever. I'll try again tomorrow."
He shook his head, picked up his backpack, and headed downstairs.
As Sorata walked out of the school building alone, he looked out of place among the cheering sports clubs and students still buzzing with energy.
On the rooftop of Suimei High's tallest building, a girl with long crimson hair stood silently, watching the courtyard below. Her stunning figure and graceful aura stood out like royalty.
Her eyes, calm and sharp, quietly followed Sorata as he left.
"President, why did we transfer here from Kuoh Academy?"
Behind her appeared another beautiful girl with jet-black hair tied in a ponytail that reached her knees. Her voice was laced with curiosity.
"Because this is his territory," the red-haired girl replied without turning. "If we go to school here, they'll be more cautious with their plans. I just want a normal school life for now. I don't feel like dealing with the politics of the Underworld."
"What about the scan I asked for?"
"I already completed it," said Himejima Akeno. "No practitioners, no awakened beings, no special creatures. This is just a normal high school."
"However…" she paused, "that boy seems to be awakening. I can sense the light gathering in him. Should we make contact?"
Rias Gremory was quiet for a moment as she watched Sorata disappear beyond the school gates.
"You noticed him too?" she said softly.
"But there's no rush. Not just anyone qualifies to become one of my peerage. Let's focus on being good students for now. We don't need to attract unnecessary trouble."
