Chapter 1 - Goodbye

Looking out the window I can see the sunrise, a day that begins again, light that warms and nourishes the earth.

Although today I think it will be my last day. It started when I was sixteen, when I was coming back from school I felt unusually weak. I told my parents about it and they took me to the hospital the next day. My diagnosis showed that there really was something wrong, but the cause was not identified.

When I was seventeen I finished my studies but my condition has been getting worse even though I eat a healthy diet and take a light walk in the morning with my mother. One morning while I was walking my vision went black and I lost control of my body. When I woke up I was in the hospital. The nurse immediately called the doctor who came into the room accompanied by my mother Martha and my father Karl. The doctor explained that, since the other tests had not been able to identify why my body was weakening, he said it was best to stay in the hospital for medical monitoring.

During the six months that I was hospitalized, my parents always visit twice a week, sometimes my five-year-old younger sister comes with them.

Today I woke up feeling more energetic but I can't feel any better. I think that's what they say, "getting better after death." Luckily, today is Saturday, one of the days my parents visit me so I could say goodbye. I think with a smile.

"Look who came too!" my father said with my sister in his arms.

"Brother!" my sister Celeste said.

My father and sister enter the room with my mother right behind them.

"Brother, look at the drawing I made for you." Celeste takes a folded sheet of paper from her dress pocket and hands it to me.

When I open it, I see a boy and a girl holding a sword fighting monsters.

"And what would that be?" I ask her.

"When my brother gets better, we'll play sword warriors and fight monsters." Celeste says with a smile on her face.

Looking at her like this, I feel happy to have a cute and filial sister, but I also feel sad that I won't be able to watch her grow up. In the future, she will be as beautiful as our mother.

"Your drawing is amazing, be a sensible girl and listen to your mommy and daddy when you grow up." I say, patting her head.

My parents, who are watching my interaction with my sister, exchange worried glances as they realize that something is not right.

"Gael, you?" Martha said with concern in her voice.

I looked at her and just smiled.

"Today I want to spend the day with all of you." I say.

My parents soon realized that my mother was in tears. My father supported her by holding her hand, tears threatening to fall from his eyes.

"Okay, son, we'll stay until the end." Karl said.

Looking at them, I felt sad to see them like this, but I have no control over my situation. It's also a little funny to see someone like my father crying. If anyone asks, it's because he's tall, strong, serious, but charismatic. He's already over 40, but he looks like he's about 30. I can say the same about my mother, who's 39 years old and has two children. She looks like she's 26 years old. Our family definitely has good genes. Maybe it's because of a good diet and martial arts practice. I used to practice martial arts too, but because of my condition, I couldn't continue.

I look back at my sister. She'll definitely follow in our parents' footsteps.

"Celeste, I don't know if I'll be able to play with you in the future, but don't be afraid. I'll be watching you from the stars."

"Is your brother going to become an astronaut?"

"Hahaha, when you grow up, you'll understand."

"Dad, mom, can we all take a picture together?"

"Sure." My mom said, her voice a little choked.

We spent the afternoon talking, it may be sad but I am calm, maybe because I am surrounded by the most important people in my life.

"Dad, Mom, Celeste, I am sleepy." I tell them. My parents already know what it is about, but even so, their emotions take over, tears silently run down their eyes.

"Sleep so you can get better and stronger, brother." Celeste says innocently.

"You too, sword warrior." I say.

"I love you all." I tell them with a smile.

Closing my eyes, darkness surrounds me so I will never wake up again.

Or so I thought.
