Chapter 3 - chapter 3

Janelle's POV

"Janelle, it's nice to finally meet you," he said with that infuriating smirk.

I cleared my throat, trying to ignore the rising tension. "Uhm... nice to meet you too."

Jay nudged me lightly, sensing something was off. "Jane, what's wrong?" His voice was low, like he already knew something was wrong.

I blinked rapidly, trying to mask my discomfort. "Uh... nothing. I'm good."

"So... Adrien here owns a law firm, and he's willing to offer you a job," Jay explained, his tone casual, but there was something about it that made me uneasy. "I'll leave you two to talk it out."

Neither of us spoke immediately. The silence between Adrien and me was heavy, uncomfortable.

"Wow... What a coincidence," Adrien broke the silence, his voice tinged with amusement.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, raising an eyebrow, trying to sound as casual as possible.

But instead of answering my question, he ignored it entirely. "Jay didn't tell me he had a sister who knows her way around a courtroom... and the bedroom," he said with a smirk, his words hitting me like a ton of bricks.

I felt my face flush at the sudden reminder of the night before. "Shhh, please," I whispered, hoping he'd let it go.

"What? Doesn't Jay know you're a little... experienced?" Adrien teased, his eyes glinting with mischief.

"Last night was a mistake," I quickly muttered, hoping my words could bury the awkwardness. But his laugh echoed in the room, sending a wave of heat through me.

"A mistake? I remember you telling me to go faster." His words were teasing, but there was something dangerous about the way he said it.

I shifted uncomfortably in my seat. "Can we talk about work now?" I asked, my voice just a little too sharp.

Adrien raised an eyebrow but complied. "Yeah... you're hired. You start Monday."

I blinked, caught off guard. "Just like that? No interview?"

He shrugged, his confidence practically oozing from him. "Is there really a need for that?"

I was still trying to process his words when I asked, "What about the dress code? do you guys have a specific way of dressing?"

"Just show up Monday, and we'll handle the rest," he said nonchalantly, as if it were no big deal.

I muttered a quiet "Okay," still in a bit of a daze.

"Now that we're done with 'business' talk," Adrien leaned in closer, his tone shifting. "Let's talk about last night."

"I was drunk," I said quickly, not wanting to revisit that part of the night. But Adrien wasn't having any of it.

"Janie... Don't lie to me. You enjoyed it, didn't you?" His voice had a way of cutting through me, and despite myself, I felt a flutter in my chest.

I opened my mouth, but the words wouldn't come.

"You guys done?" Jay's voice interrupted us, and I nearly sighed in relief.

"Turns out she has quite the experience," Adrien said with a grin, emphasizing the word experience in a way that made me wish the ground would swallow me whole.

Jay just chuckled. "I know, right? She worked as a secretary at a law firm last month. I guess that's why she's so good," Jay added, oblivious to the tension in the room.

"Yeah. I'll be leaving now," Adrien said, standing up with a casual grace. "We'll see you around, Janice."

"It's Jenelle," I said through gritted teeth, offering him a tight smile as I shook his hand.

Jay walked Adrien to the door, and as soon as the door clicked shut behind him, I let out a long breath.

"Is he gone?" I asked, already feeling the pressure lift from my shoulders.

"Yeah, he's gone," Jay said, his tone amused. "What's with you and Adrien? He doesn't scare you, does he?"

I waved him off. "Nah, it's just..." I hesitated. "It's complicated."

Jay just shrugged. "Look, I ordered pizza. You should eat something."

I grabbed a slice, trying to push everything from my mind. After eating, I went back to my room, feeling the weight of the morning still pressing on me.

"Kelly, get off that bed," I called out, already knowing she'd still be asleep.

"Ugh, it's too early," she groaned, barely opening an eye.

"No, you need to hear this."

"What's up?" Kelly sat up, her eyes still heavy with sleep.

I took a deep breath. "Remember the one-night stand I had last night?"

"Yeah, obvious," Kelly said, rolling her eyes. "Why? Is that a problem?"

"That guy—he's going to be my boss."

Kelly's eyes widened. "Wait, what? No way!"

"I know! Jay asked me to meet him, but I didn't realize Adrien was him. I never thought I'd see him again after last night."

Kelly, always the calm one, just shrugged. "Well, you're not going to see him outside of work, right?"

I shook my head, frustrated. "That's what I thought, but now I have to pretend last night never happened."

Kelly stretched lazily. "Just act normal, pretend it's no big deal."

I sighed, trying to calm my nerves. "I'll try."

Kelly smirked. "Was he good in bed though?"

I threw a pillow at her. "Kelly!"

She laughed, unbothered. "Hey, I'm just asking! You seemed to have enjoyed yourself."

"He was... good. But that's not the point!"

Kelly raised an eyebrow. "Sounds like it might be part of the point. Come on, tell me, did you enjoy the night?"

I sighed, my hands going up in surrender. "It's complicated."

"Yeah, that's what I figured," she said with a teasing grin, flopping back down on her bed. "You better not get yourself into a mess."

I rolled my eyes. "It's already a mess."

Kelly yawned. "Well, good luck. I'm going back to sleep."

I lay back on my bed, staring at the ceiling. How was I going to deal with this? How was I going to get through this job without Adrien being all over my thoughts?

My phone buzzed beside me. A text from an unknown number.

Adrien: "I hope you dress better on Monday than you did this morning. Just a tip from your new boss."

I stared at the message, my jaw dropping. The nerve!

I didn't reply, but I typed several angry responses, deleting them each time. Nothing sounded right. Everything sounded too emotional. And if there was one thing Adrien didn't need to see, it was that he was getting to me.

Finally, I locked my phone and tossed it to the side.

Let Monday come. I'll be ready.

How do you think her first day at work would be like?
