Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Beneath the Surface, Behind the Mask

The dojo was too still.

Kuro stood in the center, wrapped in shadow, sword hilt pressed gently to his shoulder. Something was wrong—not in the air, not in the building, but in the way the silence felt forced.

"Surveillance technique?""No… suppression seal?"

Then the door opened without sound.

A man stepped in. Not ANBU.

He didn't need a mask.

His right arm was wrapped in bandages. His left eye covered. His chakra—barely present, but toxic in presence—oozed control.

Danzo Shimura.

"You've drawn quite a bit of attention, boy," Danzo said.

Kuro did not respond.

"Iruka reports you perform below average in ninjutsu, yet dominate in taijutsu. Anko submits a private note that your movements match… Root conditioning. But you're not one of mine."

Danzo took another step forward, and the seal-ink around the dojo walls shimmered briefly—subtle.

Kuro felt it in his bones.

"He's sealed this place with a silence barrier. I can't cry out. No witnesses. No rescue."

Danzo's voice lowered.

"I could make you into something useful. Clean. Sharp. Hidden. A tool of the village that doesn't need flashy chakra. You could thrive under Root."

Still no answer.

Danzo stepped closer.

"Or I could remove you now. Your existence raises questions."

Then—movement.

Fast.

He reached toward Kuro with two fingers—an attempt to test something. Pressure. Intimidation. Maybe seal placement.

But Kuro was already gone.

Not with speed.

With silence.

Danzo's hand passed through air. Kuro had slipped past his reach with a sidestep so fluid it left no motion signature.

Danzo's one visible eye narrowed.

"Interesting."

"You're protecting me. Smart."

Danzo's Proposition

Danzo's tone changed.

"You have no clan. No history. You're a ghost in the system. I could erase what little there is and reforge you."

"No," Kuro said calmly.

"No?" Danzo's tone didn't shift, but the air thickened. "You understand what I am offering?"

"A cage. Just silent."

Danzo studied him for several seconds.

"You have until graduation. If you remain quiet, I will consider you… tolerable. If not…" He turned and left. "Then you'll be a threat."

As soon as the door closed, the seal snapped off.

Kuro collapsed to one knee, not from exhaustion—but from restraint.

He hadn't moved for ten minutes. Every breath, every twitch, had been hidden. Controlled. Suppressed.

Later That Week – Naruto Trains Again

Naruto hadn't noticed a change in Kuro. No one had.

But Kuro noticed everything.

The way his classmates' movements were monitored now. The way a civilian in the village dropped a coin twice in front of him—testing if he'd catch it like a trained reflex, not a child.

Danzo had already set the game.

Still, he trained with Naruto as usual.

But this time… he taught differently.

"Don't strike first," Kuro said. "Watch. Let them think they've cornered you."

"But that's boring!" Naruto shouted.

"Boring people live longer."

Naruto laughed, shook his head, and tackled him anyway.

Academy Practical Exams – Year Two

The exam hall was filled with instructors and a few special guests. One of them was Kakashi Hatake—bored, half-asleep, reading an Icha Icha book.

Naruto, Sakura, Sasuke, and the rest of the class were buzzing with nervous energy.

Kuro sat in the back row, arms folded.

The taijutsu round came first.

He was paired against a loud-mouthed genin-in-training from another class—Kaito.

Big. Confident. Fast.

The match started. Kaito blitzed forward, fists flaring with chakra—not enough to injure, but enough to boost his strikes.

Kuro stepped inside his punch arc and tapped his foot—just once—then pivoted left, used the boy's shoulder as leverage, and dropped him.

Clean.

Quiet.

The match ended in three seconds.

Instructor's Booth

Kakashi looked up from his book. Just briefly.

"Huh."

He wrote something down.

Graduation Approaches

Only six months remained until graduation.

Kuro had grown in silence.

But around him, the world had begun to spin faster:

Sasuke's training intensified after news of Itachi surfaced in hushed tones.

Naruto's chakra began surging wildly at odd hours—Kyuubi's influence showing itself.

Hinata began watching Kuro more—sensing something in his stance, perhaps something Hyuuga could never teach her.

And Danzo?

Danzo said nothing.

Which made Kuro uneasy.

One Night – The Hidden Visitor Returns

Kuro entered the dojo after midnight and found a masked figure waiting—the ANBU with the hound mask.

But something was different. His arm bled. His mask was cracked.

"They're watching you more closely now," the man said. "You survived Danzo's invitation. Impressive."

"Why are you bleeding?"

"Because I tried to stop something I wasn't meant to see. And now they know I helped you."

Kuro tensed.

"They'll come here?"

"No. Not yet. But others may."

The man dropped a pouch on the floor.

"Inside: a scroll. Pre-Shinobi martial history. Techniques once used by soldiers of the Daimyo before chakra dominance. It will suit your philosophy."

He turned.

"And one more thing."

"What?"

"The name of the man who first developed the suppression seals Danzo used on you."

Kuro waited.

"His name was Shingen Mu. He was the only one Danzo feared… until he disappeared."

The man vanished again.
