Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Academy's New Beginning

The towering gates of the academy loomed before Aren, their dark iron bars stretching high into the sky, ornate and imposing. The academy was renowned across the land, its name whispered with both reverence and awe by those who dreamed of attending. A place where the strong thrived and the weak were forged into something greater. It was a place where every student carried the weight of their bloodline, and their beasts would determine their future.

Aren stood before the gates with a mix of excitement and apprehension. His heart raced in his chest, but beneath it all was a sense of resolve. This was where he would begin his journey, where he would prove not just his worth to his family, but to the entire world. His bond with Sharu still felt fresh, like the beginnings of something powerful. The beast, small and enigmatic as it was, felt like the key to his future. He couldn't afford to fail.

"Welcome to the Academy," a stern voice broke his thoughts.

A tall figure stood before him, clad in the academy's official attire, a dark robe marked with intricate symbols of beasts. The man's sharp eyes surveyed Aren, taking in the sight of the new student.

"Sir, I'm Aren Valen. I've just arrived," Aren introduced himself, trying to keep his voice steady.

The man nodded. "I'm Instructor Varian. Follow me." Without waiting for a response, he turned and began walking toward the academy's grand entrance. Aren followed closely, Sharu perched on his shoulder, the little beast's silver fur gleaming faintly in the morning light. Its eyes, still holding a trace of disdain, scanned their surroundings with an almost bored expression, but Aren could sense the bond between them growing stronger.

As they walked, Aren took in his surroundings. The academy grounds were sprawling, with towering spires and vast courtyards. Students wandered the grounds in small groups, their beasts at their sides. The air was thick with the energy of both young and mature beasts, each different from the next, each with its own presence.

As they entered the main building, Instructor Varian led him through a series of hallways lined with portraits of famous alumni, each depicted with their beasts by their sides. The walls were adorned with banners that displayed the academy's proud history. Aren couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. This place was both intimidating and inspiring.

They reached a large, open hall where students were gathered, talking and laughing amongst themselves. The chatter died down as soon as Aren entered, and several pairs of eyes turned toward him. Some students seemed to size him up, while others whispered to one another. It didn't take long for Aren to realize that he was an outsider here—a commoner with a beast no one had seen before.

"Gather round, students!" Instructor Varian called out, his voice booming across the hall. "I'll introduce the newest student to you all."

The students, who had previously been talking amongst themselves, now turned their full attention to Aren. Some of the gazes were curious, others judgmental, but Aren held his head high. Sharu, however, seemed completely indifferent to the attention. He curled up on Aren's shoulder, seemingly too tired to care about the eyes on him.

Instructor Varian continued, "This is Aren Valen, son of the Valen family, a newcomer to the academy. His beast is... unique, to say the least. You will have the chance to interact with him as the days pass. Let's see if his bond with his beast can hold up in the coming challenges."

Aren could feel the weight of the eyes on him, the silent judgment. He didn't mind. He had learned to ignore such stares, but he knew this would be different. This place was where the strong thrived, and he had to prove that he belonged.

"Now," Varian said, "I'll leave you to settle in. Find your dormitories, and we'll begin with basic training tomorrow. No tests for now, just familiarize yourselves with your surroundings."

The students dispersed quickly, eager to resume their conversations. Aren, feeling a little lost, made his way to a corner, where he noticed a group of students talking excitedly. He could already tell that the social dynamics of this academy would be a challenge of their own.

As he walked toward an empty spot, a voice called out to him.

"Hey, new guy! Over here!"

Aren turned to see a tall, cheerful boy waving at him. He had messy brown hair and a bright smile, his beast—a small, playful salamander—snaking around his feet. The boy's eyes were full of energy and optimism.

"I'm Aric Sunflare! And this is my beast, Ember!" the boy said, giving a playful salute. "You're Aren, right? I heard about you! You're the one with the weird beast."

Aren smiled awkwardly, unsure how to respond. "Yeah, that's me. This is Sharu," he said, glancing at his beast.

Sharu, ever disinterested, barely lifted his head. Aric chuckled.

"Looks like you and your beast have a bond, even if it's a bit... unusual. Don't worry, not everyone has to have a big, flashy beast. Ember here is small, but he's got some fire in him," Aric said, giving his salamander a gentle pat. The salamander coiled around his legs playfully, and Aren could see the bond they shared was a strong one.

Aren was about to respond when a cool voice interrupted.

"Hmph. What a peculiar beast," said a girl from the opposite side of the room. She was tall and regal, with silver-white hair that shimmered in the light. She carried herself with the confidence of nobility. Her beast, a large, majestic ice wolf, stood beside her, its eyes cold and calculating.

"I'm Liora Frostwind," she said, her eyes narrowing as she looked at Aren. "Frostwind is a prestigious family. We don't typically mix with... commoners." Her tone was polite but dismissive.

Aren stood there, taken aback. He didn't expect such a cold reception. Aric, sensing the tension, quickly interjected.

"Hey, Liora, stop being so cold. Aren's alright. He's new, just like the rest of us," he said, his voice upbeat.

Liora scoffed but said nothing more, turning her attention back to her wolf. Aren could tell she wasn't interested in further conversation, but he appreciated Aric's attempt at diffusing the situation.

"Come on, Aren," Aric said, gesturing for him to follow. "Let's go grab a bite to eat. The food here's not bad, and we can talk more."

Aren followed him, grateful for the distraction. As they walked to the dining hall, they passed a group of students who seemed to be in deep conversation. One of them, a tall, serious-looking boy with dark hair, looked at Aren with an unreadable expression. His beast, a dark-hued lion, stood protectively by his side, its eyes glowing with a fierce energy.

"That's Dorian Thorne," Aric explained in a low voice. "He's from a commoner family too, but he's got a chip on his shoulder. Doesn't trust nobles, especially those with beasts that are too fancy for his liking. He's got a rivalry with Liora, though, so don't worry too much about him."

Aren nodded, understanding the dynamics at play here. It seemed like there was more to the academy than just training. Politics, pride, and rivalries were already brewing.

As they entered the dining hall, the noise of students chatting and eating filled the air. Aren took a seat with Aric, who immediately struck up a conversation with a few other students. He felt a sense of unease, but he knew this was just the beginning. There were still so many things to learn, and this academy would be both a challenge and an opportunity.

He glanced at Sharu, who was still perched on his shoulder, his eyes half-closed in disinterest. The little beast didn't seem to care about the bustling environment, but Aren knew that in time, they would

face challenges together.

This was only the start of their journey.
