Chapter 7 - Chapter Seven

The common room erupted in a fresh wave of whispers and surprised gasps. Jamie felt a strange disconnect, as if he were watching this scene unfold from a distance. Sandra, her face still pale, looked up at Principal Thompson with a mixture of shock and confusion.

His gaze flickered to Annabella. Her initial surprise seemed to have morphed into a thoughtful stillness. The playful energy that usually radiated from her was momentarily subdued, replaced by an unreadable intensity in her eyes as she looked from Jamie to Sandra and back again.

Principal Thompson, ever the pragmatist, cleared his throat. "Jamie, please escort Sandra to Unit 8. You will find the remaining instructions for the picnic basket challenge there. Annabella, please remain here for a moment."

As Jamie awkwardly made his way towards Sandra, he could feel Annabella's gaze following him. He reached Sandra, his heart pounding a nervous rhythm against his ribs.

"Sandra," he said softly, his voice a little shaky. "Are you okay?"

She nodded slowly, her eyes still clouded with distress. "I… I don't know what happened with Michael. He just… he got really upset and asked to leave."

Jamie wanted to press for details, but Principal Thompson's stern look urged them towards Unit 8. The small prefabricated home felt different without Annabella's chaotic energy. It was quiet, almost… somber.

Sandra moved with a quiet grace, her earlier distress seemingly replaced by a fragile composure. They found a new set of instructions for the picnic basket challenge, slightly modified to reflect their last-minute pairing.

Working with Sandra felt… different. There was a comfortable familiarity, a silent understanding that harked back to their childhood. They moved together with an unspoken ease, assembling a picnic basket filled with items that represented their shared history: a worn-out comic book they used to read together, a smooth, grey stone from their old backyard, a packet of her favorite strawberry candies.

As they worked, Jamie couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched. He glanced back towards the common room window a few times, but Annabella was no longer visible.

When it was their turn to present their basket, Sandra spoke softly but eloquently, her words filled with a genuine warmth as she described the significance of each item. Jamie found himself looking at her with a renewed appreciation for her quiet depth and the enduring connection they shared.

They received positive feedback from the judges, their genuine connection shining through their presentation. For a brief moment, as Sandra's hand brushed against his while accepting the compliments, Jamie felt a flicker of the hope he had harbored since the beginning of the marriage practical. Maybe, just maybe, this unexpected turn of events was the universe finally throwing him a bone.

Back in Unit 7, Annabella sat on one of the separated beds, her arms wrapped around her knees. Cathy sat beside her, her expression a mixture of concern and curiosity.

"So," Cathy said carefully, breaking the silence, "Jamie and Sandra? That's… unexpected."

Annabella nodded slowly, her gaze fixed on the opposite wall. "Yeah. Unexpected."

"Are you… okay with it?" Cathy asked gently.

Annabella finally turned to her best friend, a strange mix of emotions swirling in her eyes. "I don't know, Cath. It's weird. I mean, I wanted to be with Michael, and Jamie wanted to be with Sandra. We had this whole plan to get swapped."

"And now he is with Sandra," Cathy pointed out.

"Yeah, but…" Annabella trailed off, a thoughtful frown creasing her brow. "Spending the last couple of days with him… it wasn't as awful as I thought it would be. He's actually… kind of funny, in his own awkward way. And he's surprisingly thoughtful."

Cathy raised an eyebrow, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "Sounds like someone might be developing a soft spot for the 'weird gaming guy.'"

Annabella scoffed, but there was a distinct lack of her usual vehement denial. "Don't be ridiculous. We had a truce. We were just trying to get what we wanted."

But even as she said the words, a small voice in the back of her mind whispered that maybe, just maybe, what she wanted had started to shift without her even realizing it. The thought was unsettling, confusing, and… strangely intriguing.
