Chapter 14 - File 14: Shattered Bonds

The cold, empty hallway stretched before them, its narrow, dimly lit path barely enough to offer solace. Elena's footsteps echoed louder than her heartbeat, which pounded against her ribs like a caged animal. Henri's grip on her arm was firm, but the tension between them was palpable, like a thread that had been pulled too tightly, threatening to snap.

"We can't keep running, Elena." Henri's voice was tight, his words dripping with frustration and confusion. "You saw what happened back there. You know what's at stake now."

Elena didn't answer immediately. Instead, she focused on the cold metal of the door ahead of them, the only way out of the underground facility they had just entered. A hidden tunnel. An escape route designed for emergencies. And yet, none of it felt like a real escape. Not anymore.

"I never wanted to run from this. But what else can we do?" Her voice was quiet, almost defeated. "We're out of options, Henri. You saw my mother. The woman who raised me. The one I thought was gone, dead. She was always part of this… and so was I. I don't know who I am anymore."

Henri stopped walking, forcing her to face him. His hands gently cupped her face, his thumbs brushing against her cheeks, wiping away the tear that had escaped despite her best efforts to keep it hidden.

"You're still you, Elena. Nothing changes that." His voice was low, full of conviction. "We'll figure this out. Together."

Elena closed her eyes, trying to focus on his words, but all she could see were the images flashing in her mind—her mother's face, cold and calculating. The lies. The manipulation. The truth about her past, her bloodline, everything she'd been taught to believe about herself had been a carefully constructed illusion.

"I don't know if I can trust anyone anymore, Henri." Her words came out in a broken whisper. "Not even you."

Henri's expression faltered for just a moment, a shadow of doubt creeping into his eyes. But it was gone in an instant, replaced by a fire that burned brighter than any hesitation. He leaned in, his forehead resting against hers, his breath warm and steady against her skin.

"I don't care about your past, Elena. I don't care who your mother is or what she's done to you. I care about you. And no matter what happens, I won't leave your side."

The weight of his promise hung in the air between them. For a fleeting moment, Elena thought she could believe it. Thought she could believe in him. But then the image of Ivy flashed before her eyes—the woman who had once been her ally, her confidante. The woman who had now betrayed them both.

"Ivy…" Elena's voice cracked, and she pulled away from Henri, pacing the small space between them. "I still can't wrap my head around it. Why would she do this? Why would she turn against us like that?"

Henri didn't speak at first. His jaw tightened, his fists clenched at his sides. "Because she's not who you think she is, Elena. She's been playing both sides from the start. I saw the way she looked at you, the way she…" He paused, his voice trailing off. "The way she's been waiting for this moment."

Elena's chest tightened. "But why? What could she possibly want?"

Henri's eyes darkened. "Power. Control. You know what this is all about, Elena. It's always been about power. And Ivy… she wants to sit at the top. She wants to be in charge."

"I don't want to believe that." Elena's voice was barely audible, as if saying the words would make them real. "I just… I can't."

Henri reached out, taking her hand in his. "Ivy isn't the person you thought she was. But I am. I've got your back, no matter what. And that means we need to get ahead of this, before everything we've worked for falls apart."

Elena stared at him for a long moment, the uncertainty that had been gnawing at her mind slowly giving way to a fragile resolve. She couldn't afford to doubt him now—not when everything she'd ever known was crumbling around her.

"You're right." She took a deep breath. "We need to find out what Ivy's planning. And we need to stop her before she destroys us all."

Henri nodded. "We'll do it together."

The sound of footsteps echoing down the hall interrupted their moment of calm. Elena instinctively reached for the gun at her side, but Henri stopped her.

"It's just a guard. We've still got time."

As the footsteps grew louder, Elena's mind raced. She could feel the weight of the decision bearing down on her—the decision to trust Henri, to continue fighting despite everything she'd lost, and everything she still stood to lose. Ivy's betrayal was a blow she hadn't been prepared for, but she would not let it define her.

Not now.

Not when there was still a chance to make things right.

The guard appeared at the far end of the hallway, pausing for a moment when he saw them. His eyes flicked nervously between Elena and Henri, but he said nothing. Instead, he stepped aside, giving them a clear path.

Elena felt her pulse quicken as they approached, the uncertainty gnawing at her once more. What was waiting for them beyond the next door? What had Ivy set in motion?

"We need to move fast," Henri whispered, his voice low and urgent. "There's no telling how many more people are involved in this."

Elena nodded, her heart pounding as they pushed open the door and stepped into the darkened room beyond. The air was thick with tension, the only sound the faint hum of machinery in the background. It felt like the calm before the storm.

"I'll handle this," Henri said, his hand on the gun at his waist. "You stay close to me."

But Elena wasn't sure who she was more afraid of now—the enemies they had yet to face or the ones who had already betrayed her.

The question echoed in her mind as they moved deeper into the room: Who could she trust now?
