Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Echoes of the Forgotten

Chapter 20: Echoes of the Forgotten

The air felt heavier now.

The walls around them seemed to pulse as if alive, breathing the same stale air they were. Kira moved in front, her steps cautious but determined, the memory of survival fueling every motion. Zayn, Max, and Iris followed, knowing the only way out was deeper in.

They passed through narrow hallways, lined with old signage now barely legible, and into a broader chamber that looked like a central command hub.

Screens blinked with static, reports and data fragments flashing across their surfaces. A giant console stood at the far end, one that looked as though it hadn't been touched in ages. Panels were missing, wires exposed. Still, faint electric hums buzzed in the background, as if it were waiting to be used again.

Zayn took a deep breath. "This is where it ends. This is the heart of it."

Kira didn't respond immediately. She was already studying the monitor in front of her, her eyes scanning over the glitchy data. "It's not just a game, Zayn. This place… it's a test."

"A test?" Max muttered, glancing around. "What, like some twisted survival simulation?"

"Not exactly," Kira said, her voice barely audible. "It's a containment experiment. They wanted to see if players could survive in a world where every code-breaking part of their past was erased. If you lose everything, will you still fight? If you're forced to forget yourself, do you have the will to come back?"

Zayn's mind raced. "Are you saying this whole zone was built to erase us?"

Kira turned to face him. "It's not just you. *I* was supposed to be forgotten too. But somehow, I… I didn't die like the others."

She pointed to the flashing screen. Data streamed past them faster than they could read. "The system wiped my identity, locked me in respawn hell for days, then it just… kept me here. A test subject. But it's more than that now. Zone\_7 is corrupted, and it's getting worse. The more players die here, the more it learns, adapts, and pulls your memories into this place."

Max crossed his arms. "So we're not just fighting zombies or glitches. We're fighting the system itself?"

"Exactly," Kira replied. "And it's evolving. I thought I was the last one here, but—" she cut off, eyes narrowing at a particular line of code flashing on the screen.

\[Critical Warning: Infection Peak in 00:32 – Zone\_7 Recalibration Imminent]

\[Endgame Mode: Data Core Shift Detected]

Iris raised her weapon. "We've got thirty seconds. Let's move."

Zayn looked at Kira. "Are you with us?"

She nodded, stepping forward with resolve. "I know these halls. I'll get us to the heart."

They sprinted, each of them moving with urgency. Time was running out, and the lights above them flickered more violently as the countdown neared its end.

The corridors shifted as they progressed—walls that once seemed fixed now trembled, warped as if the very zone was alive. It wasn't just the walls that moved. Something stirred underneath their feet, the ground rumbling as if awakening.

\[Zone Recalibration in: 00:10]

The core was ahead. They could feel it. A pulsing, rhythmic thrum like the heartbeat of the entire system.

Kira darted forward, leading the way through a final, narrow hallway. A large chamber awaited them at the end. The Core. It hummed with an almost ominous energy, suspended within a containment sphere. Data lines spiraled out from it, leading to every corner of the facility. The sphere's exterior cracked and flickered, as if it too were on the verge of collapsing.

Zayn stepped forward, adrenaline pumping through his veins. "That's it. That's the heart."

Suddenly, the ground quaked. A loud mechanical screech filled the air.

From the shattered walls, hundreds of infected flooded the chamber. The Hiveborn, the zombies, and worse—their eyes glowed with a terrifying red hue as they advanced.

\[Entity Alert: Full Z-Core Awakening]

\[Final Phase: Infection Overrun Imminent]

Max opened fire, but Zayn held up a hand. "We don't have time for a fight."

He turned to Kira, determination in his voice. "You need to access the core. We stop it from recalibrating."

Kira didn't hesitate. "Stay alive for a minute."

With a swift motion, she darted toward the central control panel. Zayn and the others covered her, guns blazing, pushing back the oncoming tide of infected.

It was now or never.

The final countdown began.

\[Recalibration In: 00:01]

\[Core Detonation Sequence: Initiated]

Zayn gritted his teeth, his vision narrowing on the hordes around him. If they didn't hold their ground, they would lose everything.

Kira's voice echoed through the chaos. "Got it!"

With a sudden surge of energy, the core's pulse slowed.

And then… the countdown stopped.

The infected froze.

The room, once full of static and screams, fell into an eerie stillness.

\[Core Shutdown Successful]

\[Recalibration Interrupted – Zone\_7 Stability Restored (Temporary)]

Zayn exhaled deeply. "Is it over?"

Kira stepped back, her face pale. "For now. But it's not finished. Whatever they started here… it's just waiting for the next cycle."

Max let out a breath of relief. "I'll take that 'for now.'"

Iris wiped her brow. "Let's get out of here before the system starts trying again."

But as they turned to leave, Zayn couldn't shake the feeling that the worst was yet to come. The Hollow Nexus had been stopped, but something more sinister had just awoken, and the path forward seemed darker than before.

\[System Message: Zone\_7 Inactive]

\[New Quest Available: Unravel the Secrets of Zone\_7]
