Chapter 5 - The Dock

The Man in the Sunglasses:

Shaking my head, I adjust my sunglasses before reaching into my pocket and pulling out my Master Morpher. I look at my Morpher, admiring it, before turning back.

"I don't know what I started thinking about Jason and the other Protectors," I say, speaking to Lois Lane. "I mean, sometimes I do miss them, but I had to leave. As much as I wanted to, I couldn't stay. Still, I did what I could, hoped for the best, and left their world in solid hands. Their hands."

I shove the Morpher back into my pocket before going on.

"Hey. How are you doing? I hope you're doing well. I mean, I know you're dead, but still. I hope you're doing well."

Sighing, I try again, still trying to find the right words.

"I'm trying to help your husband. Superman isn't a bad person. He's just so filled with anger that he's not seeing straight. I don't blame him, though. I have been in his shoes more than once, and more than once, I have done...things because of it. I'm not sure if they're worse than what Superman has done, but they're definitely not things I should be saying out loud."

Looking at Lois Lane as she rests, I nod at her.

"Sorry to be bothering you, Mrs. Lane," I say. "I just thought, maybe, you would like an update on things."

I take a deep breath as I drop to one of my knees. Exhaling, I place my hand on Mrs. Lane's stone.

"Don't worry," I say. "I'll find a way to save Superman. I have no idea how, but I will. Sorry for bothering you."

I said what I wanted before standing back up. I let out another sigh before turning to walk away. As I walk back down the hill, away from Mrs. Lane and the others resting, I reach into one of my jacket pockets for a teleporter. About to throw it and open a portal to the base, my shaking phone stops me.

"What do you want, Higgin?"

"Hello to you, too," Higgin answers. "How are you doing?"

"I'm feeling a bit nostalgic. What do you want?"

"I'm sending you some information now. Superman is up to something."

Hearing a beep, I pull my phone away. Tapping an icon, I see pictures of Superman, his regimes, and One Earth soldiers on a dock. They're moving things onto boats and submarines before sending them out.

"Any idea what Superman is doing," Higgin asks.

"No idea. This isn't the New Metropolis's dock. Where is this?"

"It's Central City. Yeah, according to some logs from your informant, Superman ordered all of this really early in the morning. Like, 4 a.m early!"

"Hmm," I say. "Hey, thanks for this. I'll go and check it out."

"No problem. Who should I call?"

"Call?"

"Yeah. Who should I call? Your partner?"

"Uhh. No one, this time."

"No one? Wait, you don't want a partner?"

"Maybe not this time."

"But wait. You always have a partner with you. You once told me that if you don't have one, there's a chance--"

"I'm be fine," I say, cutting Higgins off. "Thank you for the information."

I end the call and pocket my phone before pulling out my teleporter. Setting the destination for Central City's Dock, I throw the teleporter, and it opens a portal for me to jump through.

Landing on the waterlogged dock, I find cover behind some nearby boxes. Quickly ducking behind them, I peek over and watch the scene.

"Move," Wonder Woman says, pointing toward the sea. On command, a team of One Earth soldiers, all carrying crates filled with supplies, run further down the dock. They split apart, half the teams running onto boats and the other half disappearing into submarines.

"Boats," I whisper. "And submarines? What on Earth would Superman need submarines for?"

I keep watching everything from behind covers. Besides Wonder Woman, I see Black Adam and Nightwing coordinating more soldiers. They're filling the boats and submarines with various things: life vests, oxygen tanks, machine pistols, explosives, and a lot more.

Reaching into one of my pockets, I pull out my cell phone and start taking picture after picture.

"I can study these later at the base," I tell myself. "Maybe I can figure out what Superman is planning with these."

As I keep taking pictures, I stop. Staying calm, I place my hand on the dock, pretending to fall and catch myself. With my hand on the wooden dock, I feel the vibrations. I feel every step of the soldiers walking up and down, and the ones behind me.

Pulling my hand up, I pretend to take more pictures. As I snap another picture, I hear noise. It sounds like wood hitting wood. Not regular wood, like the dock. This wood is very dry. The barks had been removed. Also, it had been sawed down. I listen more and hear the sound of a string being pulled back. Now, hearing a "whooshing" sound, I turn around.

Shooting my hand out, I grab the arrow before it can hit me. Throwing the arrow to the ground, I look up. There, standing on the streets and nearby ledges, are men and women, all dressed in black cloak and hood. They are also all armed, each holding a bow, a quiver filled with arrows, and many blades.

"Assassins," I say, standing up. "From the League of Assassins? But why?"

I don't get the chance to think about it. Simultaneously, all the assassins reach for arrows from their quivers. They place the arrows in the bow, pull the bowstring, and fire. Jumping and backflipping over the boxes, I grab one and use it as a shield.

The arrows rain all over the dock. They cover almost every inch of it. I struggle to keep the box up as more and more arrows hit it.

"It's you," someone shouts. Turning around, I see Wonder Woman, Black Adam, and everyone else looking at me.

"Uhhhh," I moan, clearing my throat. "Hey. How's life?"

Wonder Woman doesn't answer me. Instead, she pulls out her sword and shield and flies toward me. Screaming as she flies, I pull my hands behind me. Winding up, I throw the arrows-covered box at Wonder Woman. Stopping, Wonder Woman crosses her arms.

The box breaks apart as it hits Wonder Woman. As it does, the box's contents fall out everywhere.

"Rockets," I say, seeing a bunch of rockets litter the dock. There's a lot more than rockets, too. There are also small missiles, grenades, and what look like mines. A lightbulb turns on above my head. Moving fast, I run and jump.

"Attack him," Wonder Woman yells, pointing at me. The soldiers drop what they're carrying. They reach for their guns and aim at me. However, by the time they do, I'm already grabbing Wonder Woman.

Screaming as I spin Wonder Woman through the air, I pull my hand back and, with the ancient power of the force, I throw her through the dock into the water. While Wonder Woman goes into diving, I land on the dock.

"You should not have come here alone," Black Adam yells, flying at me from behind. Stopping and shooting out his hands, Black Adam fires lightning bolts at me. Shooting out my hands, I shoot lightning bolts back at him.

Black Adam's eyes widen, and his jaws fall as we duel.

"How," Black Adam groans, his feet landing the dock as he struggles to keep his hands up. "What magic is this?"

"It's not magic," I answer. Hearing footsteps quickly approaching me, I turn and see Nightwing running toward me. Pulling out his batons, he spins them as he charges. Jumping and pulling back his batons, I swing my hand. Grabbing and catching him in mid-air, I feel myself start to lose it.

"No," I say. "No. No!"

Shaking my head, trying not to lose control, trying not to let my dark side win, I throw Nightwing into the water. Bringing my hands back, I push, and with my force lightning, I knock Black Adam away.

Dropping to a knee, I breath in and out as both One Earth soldiers and assassins run at me from both sides.

"I can't fight all these people alone," I think. "Not without losing control, and I can't lose control."

Looking around for one of the explosives from the broken box, I see a small black box nearby. Using the force, I grab and throw the box into my hand. Quickly examining it, I see that the box really is a mine, and the mine is already active. All I need to do is push the big red button.

"Hey, hey, hey," I shout, standing up with the mine in my hand. As I stand back up and show everyone the mines, the soldiers and assassins stop running. "I would get out of here if I were you."

Pushing the button, I throw the mine back onto the ground. The soldiers and assassins don't waste a second. They all turn around, pushing, screaming, and running away. I look at the mine as it explodes, turning from a black box into a growing fireball.

The fireball reaches the other explosives, like the rockets and grenades, and starts a chain reaction. All the other explosions explode, too, and before I know it, the entire Central City's Dock is swallowed by fire.

The boats are turned into ashes. The submarines are melted. The supplies the soldiers were carrying are burnt beyond recognition.
