Chapter 6 - Off the Grid

Supergirl:

"You're still standing here," Harleen asks. I turn my head and see both Harleen and Selina standing side by side in the hallway with me.

"Are you still staring at his room," Selina asks. Selina turns to look at The Man's empty room.

"Yeah," I say, nodding my head. "I don't know why, but I just can't shake this weird feeling about him. Like there's something wrong."

"Yeah," Harleen says, nodding her head. "That's being a bit...vague. There are a lot of things, well, I wouldn't say 'wrong', but more like 'odd' about Mr. Sunglasses."

"Hey," I say. "That's a little rude."

"I'm just saying," Harleen says, putting up her hands and backing away. "I appreciate everything Mr. Sunglasses did for us and whatnot, and I understand the guy liking his secrets, all one trillion of them, but even Batman had to tell some people he's Bruce Wayne."

"I guess."

Sighing, I look back at his room.

"Still. Even you have to admit that one thing is definitely wrong."

"What's that?"

"It's him leaving without a partner. Someone to watch his back. Or to keep him calm."

"Yeah, you're right about that. Mr. Sunglasses usually tells us never to go anywhere alone. Even in where."

As she says this, Harleen spreads out one of her arms. She places her hand on the wall, leaning against it, until her hand sinks in!

"Ahhh," Harleen screams. Pushing herself off the wall, all of us watch as a hidden pressure plate sinks deeper into the wall. We then hear the sound of gears turning and of metals hitting each other.

"Get down," Selina shouts, tackling me and Harleen to the floor. A few seconds later, a part of the ceiling shoots out. It would have hit us, knocking us down, if Selina hadn't tackled us in time.

"Are you two okay," Selina asks while she and I help Harleen to her feet.

"Yeah," Harleen answers while dusting herself off. When she's done, she points at the wall. "That's a new trap."

As Harleen points at the wall, we hear a familiar voice speaking through our earpiece.

"Hey," Anthony yells, "Everyone! To the meeting room! The Man is back! And he learned something important."

"The Man is back," I think. I turn to Selina and Harleen. "Let's go!"

When we get to the meeting room, most of the Insurgnecy are already inside. Having to push my way in, I look around for The Man, but I don't see him anywhere.

"Where is he," I ask, turning to the others.

"I have no idea," Oliver answers. Oliver places his fingers on his earpiece. "Anthony. Are you there? We're all here in the meeting room, but we don't see The Man any--"

Before Oliver can finish, a portal opens up and cuts him off.

"Never mind. Forget I asked."

As Oliver lowers his hand, bright orange and red flames jump through the portal. As the flames try to hit us, we all scream and jump back.

"Get back," Oliver yells. "Everyone, get back!"

He and Barry push most of us back. Meanwhile, Leonard and I rush ahead. Leonard uses his cold gun, and I use my frost breath to keep the fire back. As I blow the flames away, I see someone jumping through.

As The Man lands on the floor with a loud thud, I run to help him up while Leonard keeps the flames back. At least until the portal closes.

"What was that," Leonard asks, holstering his cold gun.

"A mine," The Man answers, wiping black dust from his face. "Along with a few other explosives. Apparently, mostly incendiary explosives."

The Man then turns to look at me.

"Thank you," he says. I turn away.

"Don't mention it," I say. I let go of him and step back. Standing up by himself, The Man dusts himself off before looking at all of us.

"I think I might know Superman's next move," The Man states. Reaching into his pocket, The Man pulls out his cell phone. "Take your seat because you are going to want to see this."

While we take our seats, The Man walks up to the table and activates the holo-screen. He then brings up pictures. We see a dock filled with One Earth soldiers moving supplies onto submarines and boats.

"I know that dock," Barry says.

"You should," The Man adds. "It's the, was the Central City's dock."

"This is where you were this morning," I ask.

"I went somewhere else first, but that is my secret."

"Yup," Harleen says, nodding.

"What's going on there," Jason asks, pointing at the picture. "Why are One Earth soldiers loading supplies onto boats and submarines?"

"I can't be sure about the boats, but the submarines. Those are Hextron 400000."

"Hex-tron 400000," Jaime repeats.

"Hextron 40000. They're deep-sea submarines, best used for exploration at 15,000 meters. Or around 50,000 feet."

"Why would Superman be so interested in the deep sea all of a sudden," Slade asks.

"It's not the deep sea that had Superman's attention," The Man answers. "It's the city in the deep sea."

"The city in the deep sea," I repeat. "What city is underneath 50,000 feet of water?"

The Man didn't answer me. Instead, he nudges his head over to Barry. I turn to Barry as his eyes widen.

"Atlantis," Barry answers.

"Atlantis," I repeat.

"Atlantis," a lot of us repeat.

"Superman is going after Atlantis," Barry states. "He's going after Aquaman."

I turn to The Man and see him nodding his head. He picks up his phone and taps the screen.

"Higgin. I need you to send me some more folders. Yes. Thank you very much."

The pictures of One Earth soldiers and submarines disappear. Now, there are pictures of a bright, glowing city in the ocean. The city is massive, with people swimming all around. It's not just people who are swimming around. I also see sea animals like whales, turtles, and schools of fish. All of them are swimming carelessly through colorful lights built into these amazing structures.

"Excuse me," Leonard says, raising his hand and grabbing all our attention. "Quick question. Well, more like a repeated question because this was never answered. Why the sudden interest in Atlantis?"

"Yeah," Barry says. "Why the sudden interest in Aquaman and Atlantis?"

"I don't know," The Man answers, his hand going over his mouth. Bringing up his phone again, The Man taps his screen, and more pictures appear on the holographic screen. Now, I see a tall man with short blond hair. The man wears an orange shirt, blue pants, and a strange-looking purple shoulder plate. In his hand is a golden trident. It takes me a few seconds to recognize the man.

"Arthur Curry," The Man starts, "Better known as Aquaman, is the king of Atlantis. He holds the Trident of Atlan, which makes him king according to Atlantis's most sacred laws."

"Aquaman," I repeat, nodding. "Yeah. I remember him. He was on Brainic's ship!"

"Yup. After Brainic's defeat, he was on the side to kill Brainic. While you, Flash, and Green Lantern fought Superman, Aquaman fought Batman. Batman actually stabbed him in his leg with his own trident. That was a little hilarious."

The Man chuckles. We all look at him as he laughs.

"Anyway," The Man goes on, clearing his throat. "After his fight with Batman, he escaped to Atlantis and put the whole city on lockdown. He had been off the grid ever since, avoiding contact with anyone. No, let me rephrase that. Avoiding contact with us 'surface dwellers'."

"Soo," Harleen says, joining in. "If he's avoiding contact with us surface dwellers, what does that mean for Superman?"

"It means a possible war," The Man answers.

"War," I repeat, jumping out of my seat.

"Yes. Between Superman and his One Earth and Aquaman and Atlantis. It's going to be a bloodbath."

"We have to do something," I say. "If there's a possibility of war, then we need to stop it."

"You can't be serious," Jason Rusch says from the table. "Kara. Doesn't this whole situation remind you of something?"

"What are you talking about?"

"Kara. This is exactly like the situation with the Green Lanterns. We rushed to help them because they were at war with the Yellow Lanterns, and what happened. They attacked us. They rejected us. They didn't want our help."

"And they were destroyed," The Man says. "Almost all of them. They may not have wanted our help, but they did need it."

The Man turns his head and looks at the pictures of Aquaman and Atlantis. Looking at the pictures, The Man then turns back to us.

"We're going to Atlantis," he says.

Smiling when I hear what The Man said, I also hear the sound of moaning and groaning.

"You can't be serious," Jason Todd whines.

"Are we really going to Atlantis," Barry asks. "Aquaman won't be happy to see us. Any of us."

"How are we even supposed to get there," Leonard cries. "What? Can the Rusted also transform into a submarine?"

"No, the Rusted can't transform into a submarine."

"Really," Harleen says. "Wow. I am actually surprised by that."

"Wait, wait, wait," I say, turning to The Man. "You don't have a submarine? Then how are we supposed to get to Atlantis?"

"Whoever said I don't have a submarine. I just said the Rusted can't transform into a submarine. I mean, yeah, I guess I could modify the Rusted to have the capacity to transform into one. It wouldn't be too hard. The atmosphere generator can already produce oxygen, and the rocket boosters, with a few adjustments, could be used underwater. All the Rusted would really need is a dome to protect her passengers from the water. Hmm. Wait, wait, wait. No, no, no! I have a submarine."

"That," Harleen says, pointing at The Man. "That right there doesn't surprise me."

"Come on," The Man says, walking up to the table. Bringing up his phone again, all the pictures on the holographic screen disappear, and the screen turns off. "The Junker is this way."

"The Junker?"

"Yes. My submarine? I christen her, the Junker."
