Classification of the Angels of the Lord
Archangels: Universal Level
The four oldest and most powerful of God's angels. They were the only ones to have seen His face. They exist on a higher plane of existence, imbued with unimaginable and immeasurable power and authority. Furthermore, they are among the strongest beings in all of Creation. The four archangels were born in this specific order: Michael, Lucifer, Raphael, and Gabriel. They are the angels who knew God personally, and therefore are the angels Anna described.
Currently, only two archangels remain alive:
• Michael (currently trapped in Lucifer's Cage)
• Lucifer (currently in his Season 5 origin shell, remade by Crowley's demons in Hell)
Gabriel was killed by Lucifer, and Raphael was killed by Castiel while he possessed all the souls of Purgatory.
Seraphim: Level 1
Seraphim are an entirely different type of angelic being, ranking above regular angels and cupids. Zachariah, for example, was Castiel's direct superior before his death. After multiple resurrections, Castiel became a Seraphim.
Seraphim report directly to the Archangels. They can be killed by regular angel blades, though for some reason, they do not typically carry their own. Known Seraphim include Castiel (after his promotion) and Zachariah. Like the Archangels, their powers are innate, meaning they do not lose them even if they fall or leave Paradise. Metatron is also a Seraph.
Angels of Virtue: Level 2
This category in the Angelic Hierarchy represents those responsible for maintaining the order of the Universe. They eliminate obstacles that oppose God's will and ward off evil angels that seek to lead people astray. As such, they possess a great capacity to transmit divine energy.
The primary attributes of Virtue Angels are purity and royalty. According to Dionysius, they possess unshakable strength and power, always reflecting on the source of all virtues and transmitting them to their subordinates. They are associated with miracles, often invoked as heroes. Anna is a Virtue.
Angels of Dominion: Level 3
This angelic category belongs to the high celestial nobility. Dominion Angels are described in ancient texts as strong and commanding beings whose mission is to ensure God's will is fulfilled. They govern the universe and are sent for the most critical missions.
They act as Heaven's executives, ruling over all angelic groups beneath them. While they receive orders from the Cherubim, Dominions influence all angels, including those closest to God.
Saint Gregory referred to them as "the army of Heaven," stating:
"Some ranks of the angelic army are called Dominions because the rest are submissive to them-that is, they obey them."
Dominion Angels rarely interact directly with humans but remain deeply connected to our reality.
Throne Angels: Level 4
The Throne Angels witnessed the creation of Earth. Even Castiel was once a Throne Angel before rebelling and becoming a fallen angel.
Ranked third in the Angelic Hierarchy, they are named for their duty to guard God's throne.
Described as "whirlwinds of light" and celestial musicians, they are often depicted with harps and trumpets.
Highly attuned to humans, they inspire beauty and art.
Though not as close to God as the Seraphim, they serve as messengers, transmitting His orders through songs. They frequently intervene in family and professional conflicts, attentive to human needs. However, no Throne Angel has ever seen God -they communicate with Him telepathically.
Angels of Power: Level 5
Also called "Powers" or "conductors of the sacred order," they rank fifth in the Angelic Hierarchy. They are the guardians of animals and protect the procreation of all living species.
Their mission is to shield humanity from evil, freeing people from temptations and removing negative influences. They possess deep insight into human nature and act as necessary to fulfill God's will. Additionally, they maintain balance among the four elements: water, earth, fire, and air.
Cupid Angels: Level 6
Cupids, also called Cherubim, are third-class angels at the bottom of Heaven's hierarchy. They follow Heaven's orders, primarily serving Michael. Their role involves manipulating affection within specific bloodlines.
For example, John and Mary Winchester were matched by a Cupid (though not the one in "My Bloody Valentine") under Heaven's directive so that Dean and Sam could be born.
Fallen Angels: Level 0
[Retains the same power as before but loses Heaven's support, weakening over time.]
Fallen Angels are those banished from Heaven or who left voluntarily. Physically, they appear no different from normal angels, though their abilities may diminish depending on their original rank.
Their blood can be used in the Anti-Leviathan weapon.
Known Fallen Angels include:
• Lucifer (banished)
• Anna Milton (left willingly)
• Castiel (fell twice: first by rebelling against the Apocalypse, then by choosing free will)
As a Seraph, Castiel retains all his powers despite his fall.
Nephilim: Special Level
[Nephilim are exceptions to celestial power rules, alongside the Nephalem. They have no fixed level, as they continually grow stronger than their angelic parents.]
Nephilim are a hybrid race, half-human and half-angel. Only one was known to exist on Earth, and Castiel killed it as part of a spell to expel all angels from Heaven. Considered aberrations by angels, they are feared for their limitless potential.
