Ryoto had just walked out with Kushina, only to be yanked along by her.
"What for?"
"We need to buy a gift for Mikoto. We can't just show up at the Uchiha house empty-handed tomorrow, right?"
As soon as Ryoto realized he was being roped into shopping, he felt a deep, existential dread.
What's the bane of every man's existence?
Shopping, of course.
But Kushina was practically skipping with joy.
She hadn't been out in days. Just now, Mikoto mentioned that the higher-ups—the real snakes—had been dismissed or neutralized, so she didn't have to worry anymore. She even checked with Grandma Mito, who gave the green light.
So whether Ryoto liked it or not, he was getting dragged into this.
Ryoto and Kushina were walking through the village streets when they happened to run into a group of shinobi.
Leading them was none other than Danzo.
Flanking him? Hatake Sakumo, the White Fang of Konoha, and Namikaze Minato.
Danzo caught sight of Ryoto, glanced at him briefly, then turned away with zero emotion. Classic Danzo—showing less expression than a brick wall.
As they passed by, Ryoto quickly pulled Minato aside.
"Hey, what's going on?"
Minato shot him a blank look. "Confidential mission. I can't say."
"Seriously? Not even a hint?"
"Nope. Lord Hokage's eyes are everywhere."
Ryoto scanned the area. No ominous crows this time, but he could definitely feel someone watching.
That old man sure loved to lurk.
Ryoto finally let go of Minato and let him pass.
Once they were out of earshot, Hatake Sakumo commented, "You're close with him?"
"Yeah, same squad."
"He's strong."
Minato nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah! I was gonna challenge him again this week—one-on-one, final showdown. But this mission popped up."
"You won't beat him," Sakumo said bluntly.
Minato deflated. "Ouch, come on, don't crush my dreams like that."
White Fang just shook his head. "Not crushing anything. I think he might be even stronger than me."
Minato's eyes nearly popped out.
...
"Where are they going?" Kushina asked curiously.
"Minato wouldn't say. So secretive… Want to follow them?"
Kushina shook her head. "Boring. We've got cake to order and gifts to buy."
Ugh. Shopping again.
Ryoto's objections were ignored as Kushina dragged him across Konoha, visiting every cake shop in the village before finally placing an order.
In the Naruto world, currency is measured in "ryō." Banknotes and coins all follow this unit.
Missions are priced based on rank: D-rank ranges from 5,000 to 50,000 ryō; C-rank around 30,000 to 100,000 ryō; B-rank from 80,000 to 200,000 ryō; A-rank from 150,000 to 1 million ryō; and S-rank pays over a million ryō.
1 ryō = 10 yen.
A pork chop rice bowl costs about 800 yen. Add more meat? That's 1,000 yen. A cheap magazine? 600 yen. A few pieces of oden? 500 yen.
Kushina's cake? A cool 10,000 yen—1,000 ryō.
Then she snagged a pair of earrings for 38,888 yen.
That's nearly 50,000 yen—5,000 ryō—basically a full D-rank mission payout.
Kushina: Secretly a rich lady.
Meanwhile, Ryoto had just 1,000 ryō to his name, recently handed out by the Ministry of Finance. That's the base salary for a junior shinobi.
If that wasn't enough, you had to take on missions. As the saying goes, even heroes are broke without money.
Zabuza knows this pain. That's why he worked for Gato in the Mist.
Luckily, Ryoto got to live rent-free at the Uzumaki household. Otherwise, he'd be grinding out missions too.
...
The next day at noon, they headed to the Uchiha district—the headquarters of the Konoha Police Force.
The Uchiha clan, one of Konoha's most prestigious bloodlines, had led the police force since the village's founding.
The Senju clan used to share the spotlight. Once part of the "Big Three" bloodlines.
But two decades later, the Senju were nearly wiped out. Only Tsunade remained, doing her own thing.
With the Senju nearly gone and the Hyuga being famously private, the Uchiha now considered themselves top dogs.
They were wealthy, powerful, and not exactly social butterflies with other clans.
But today, none of them dared to look down on Ryoto.
He was the last heir of the Senju.
In just a week, he had dismantled Kumogakure's conspiracy and ousted top Konoha officials like Danzo, Homura, and Koharu. His reputation soared.
In terms of status, he was on par with the Uchiha clan head, Uchiha Shuna.
In strength? He had awakened the Senju bloodline limit and singlehandedly crushed ten Root agents.
So yeah, pretty strong.
That's why Uchiha Fugaku and Uchiha Mikoto—rising stars of the Uchiha—were waiting to greet him at the gate.
Ryoto and Kushina arrived right on time with cake and gifts. Spotting Mikoto at the entrance, they quickly walked over.
"Mikoto! Happy birthday! Here's the cake we made, and your present! We were short on time, so it's a little rushed."
"Kushina, thank you! I'm so happy you came! The cake is adorable, and these earrings—so pretty!"
Mikoto didn't wait—she put them on immediately. "Kushina, how do they look?"
Kushina turned to Ryoto. "Ryoto, what do you think? Pretty, right?"
Oh no. It's the dreaded trap question.
"I'm blind. I wouldn't know pretty if it hit me in the face."
Mikoto and Kushina both snorted with laughter.
[Ding, Kushina's favorability +5.]
[Ding, Mikoto Uchiha's favorability +10.]
Seriously, System? I didn't even say anything flattering. What are you up to, boosting Mikoto's score again?
