Chapter 6 - The Scholars of the Mountain

As I reached the top of the mountain, I was greeted by an old man, he seemed to be expecting me.

"Greetings young one, I am master Roshar."

"Greetings master."

"Now, what brings such a young boy to the top of these mountains?"

"I came to learn with you, learn to be a Stormchaser."

"Very well then, we'll start tomorrow. Until then, you must be hungry, let me take you to the dining hall."

There were around thirty scholars inside, along with ten or fifteen servants, the only way to tell them apart was the clothing, The scholars had a very distinct type of apparel, each of a unique color, while the servants had very normal, general purpose attire. There was no one young amongst them, all the scholars were close to or older than Roshar, and the servants were only slightly younger.

The hall itself was a large and brightly lit stone building, big enough to hold maybe three to four hundred people having dinner simultaneously.

As we sat down to eat, Roshar started talking to me

"There used to be a lot more of us here, sometimes someone, like you, comes here to train, but at this point they rarely stay."

I stayed silent.

"Long ago, Stonewardens built this place by shaping the top of the mountain to fit their needs, it was originally a fortress, but it was abandoned, decades later, a group of Stormchasers found this place while searching for a new home and decided to stay. It quickly became known as a safehaven for channelers from around the world, especially for Stormchasers, due to their powers, they found it very hard to settle down in one place, but regardless of were they went, they would always have a home to go back to, in the mountains. Years later, a war started, most of the people that lived here left to go fight, the only ones who stayed were the children, such as myself, and the scholars. Most of those who left didn't come back, so it was up to the scholars to teach the kids all they knew."He had a melancholic tone while saying this, as if he dreamed of returning this place to it's former glory.

He talked in such a compeling way, even I started to feel sad for the loss of what I had never known, the loss of what I could've known.

"But there's no use in dwelling in the past" He said it almost as if he was answering himself. "Let's find you a room, after all, training starts early morning."

The next day a servant came to wake me up, he gave me apparel similar to that wich I saw the scholars wearing, but white, to simbolize my ignorance and my status as apprentice, he put a slice of bread with cheese in my nightstand and told me master Roshar was waiting for me in the training grounds. I got dressed, ate my breakfast quickly and made my way to the training grounds.

As soon as I arrived, master Roshar started speaking,

"There are two ways you can use channeling, inward and outward. Inward allows you to improve your abilities, in your case, speed. Outward allows you to summon and control lightning. We'll start by practicing channeling inward. Show me how you do it."

I started channeling lightning.

"Very well, now... Catch!"

He threw a ball at me so fast I couldn't react, even with my improved speed. The ball hit me in the forehead.

"Again!" This time I managed to dodge it.

He kept throwing the ball at me until I could catch it regularly, then he started throwing two balls at a time, one with each hand, to multiple parts of my body, after a while, he started using three balls. By the end of the day, I was full of bruises, but I had gotten much better at channeling, and was able to catch or dodge all three balls about half the time.

"Good work today, tomorrow we'll let your body rest, meet me at the library."

The next day a servant came to wake me up, he gave me the tunic and my breakfast and left. I got dressed, ate, and went to the library as I had been instructed. Roshar taught me mathematis, geography and history, he taught me about the myths around the creation of the channelers, some taught we were gods' angels sent down, others tought we were devil's spawn. I tought they were fools.
