Chapter 38 - Chapter 38

The land stretched endlessly before them, barren and unforgiving. The silence was unsettling, broken only by the occasional howl of wind that swept through the hollowed-out trees. Every step Aria took felt heavier, as though the very earth was resisting her presence. The longer she walked, the more she could feel it—the pulse of something ancient, something that called to her from within.

It was a deep, rhythmic pull, like the beat of a heart. A heart that was not her own.

"Do you feel it?" Ronan's voice cut through her thoughts, his words low and cautious. He had been silent for a while, but his presence beside her was a constant reminder that she was not alone in this strange, otherworldly place.

Aria nodded, her eyes scanning the horizon. "Yes. It's like… something is waiting for me."

Her words were barely a whisper, but she knew he understood. The atmosphere around them was thick with anticipation, as if the world itself held its breath, waiting for the next step in their journey.

Suddenly, the ground trembled beneath their feet. It was a subtle shift at first, a low rumble that vibrated through the earth. But it quickly grew stronger, as though something beneath them was waking up.

Ronan's hand instinctively reached for hers, his grip firm but not tight. "Stay close," he said, his eyes darting around as if searching for the source of the disturbance.

Aria felt the power stir within her, a dangerous warmth that spread from her chest to her fingertips. The bloodline inside her was alive, responding to the trembling earth, feeding off the power that surged through the land.

And then, from the distance, a figure appeared.

It was tall and cloaked in darkness, its form barely visible against the shadowy backdrop of the realm. Its presence was imposing, its energy undeniable. Aria could feel the weight of its power even before it stepped forward, the shadows clinging to it like a second skin.

Ronan tensed beside her, but Aria stood frozen, her eyes locked on the figure as it drew closer. It was like the very air around them thickened, charged with an electric energy that made the hairs on her arms stand on end.

When the figure finally stopped, Aria found herself unable to speak. The figure was cloaked in shadow, but there was something unmistakably familiar about the energy it radiated. The power was ancient, older than anything she had ever encountered before.

And then, in a voice that sent a shiver down her spine, it spoke.

> "Aria… Moonblood."

Her name, spoken by a voice that echoed with an almost tangible weight, made her heart race. She had heard that voice before—the same one from her dreams. The same one that had haunted her in the quiet moments of the night.

"Who are you?" Aria asked, her voice steady but tinged with uncertainty. She could feel Ronan's hand tighten around hers, but she didn't look away from the figure. She couldn't. It was as if it had rooted her to the spot, as though the figure had some kind of hold over her.

The figure slowly lifted its hood, revealing a face half-hidden in shadow. Its eyes were glowing, a sickly yellow hue that seemed to pierce through Aria's very soul.

"I am the first of your bloodline," the figure said, its voice now smooth and resonant, carrying an ancient weight. "I am the one who first bound your family to the Shadow Alpha. The one who broke the world and set your fate into motion."

Aria's breath caught in her throat. "No... this can't be real."

The figure stepped forward, and Aria instinctively took a step back, though her feet felt like they were cemented to the ground. "It is real. This world is the product of choices made long ago. Choices that have led to your birth. You are the one who will end it all. The one who will decide the fate of the world."

"Why?" Aria whispered, her voice breaking. "Why me?"

The figure raised its hand, a single finger pointing at her chest, where her heart beat frantically. "Because you are the heir of the Shadow Alpha. Your blood is the key to ending the war between worlds. The darkness that is beginning to consume everything. The prophecy has already been set in motion, and you are the one who must fulfill it."

Aria's mind was reeling. She had known there was more to her bloodline than she had understood, but this? This was too much. She wasn't ready for this. She didn't even know what the prophecy meant, and the weight of it was suffocating.

"I don't understand," Aria whispered, her voice cracking as she took a shaky step back. "I don't know what I'm supposed to do."

The figure tilted its head slightly, as though contemplating her words. "That is the test of your strength. You must face your legacy, embrace the power within you, or be consumed by it. But know this, Aria Moonblood: once you accept your destiny, there will be no turning back."

A chill ran down Aria's spine. The words were heavy, final. The truth was too much to bear, but she knew there was no avoiding it. Her bloodline, the Shadow Alpha, it was all connected. She had no choice but to face it.

"I'm not ready for this," Aria said, her voice barely a whisper.

The figure's glowing eyes narrowed. "No one is ever truly ready. That is the burden of your bloodline. But you have already made the choice by stepping into this realm. You cannot escape what you have become."

Suddenly, the figure began to dissolve into the shadows, its form shifting like smoke, as if it had never existed in the first place. "The path is before you," it whispered, its voice fading into the wind. "Embrace the darkness or let it consume you."

And just like that, the figure was gone, leaving Aria and Ronan standing alone in the vast, empty expanse of the realm.

Aria stood in stunned silence, her heart pounding in her chest. Ronan's grip on her hand tightened, but neither of them spoke for a long moment. There were no words that could capture what had just happened, no words that could undo the weight of the choice that had just been placed before her.

She turned to him, her eyes wide and filled with fear. "What am I supposed to do, Ronan?"

Ronan met her gaze, his expression unreadable, but there was something in his eyes—something deep and knowing—that made her heart ache.

"We'll find the answers, Aria," he said quietly. "Together."

But even as he spoke, Aria could feel the shadow growing closer. And in her heart, she knew that soon, she would have to make the choice that would change everything.
