Chapter 37 - Chapter 37

Aria's mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, none of them clear enough to grasp. The figure's words echoed in her ears, each repetition heavier than the last: "You must choose… embrace your legacy, or let it consume you…"

She wasn't ready for this. She didn't even know what her legacy was—what her bloodline truly meant. For so long, she had believed that her only connection to the Shadowlands was the sacrifice she was meant to be. A victim. A pawn in a game she hadn't even understood. But now… now it seemed as though she was more than that. She was a key. A pivotal force that could either save or destroy everything.

"Aria, talk to me," Ronan's voice broke through the fog in her mind. His touch on her arm was firm, pulling her from the depths of her thoughts.

She blinked, focusing on him. His face was filled with concern, his brow furrowed, but there was something else too—something deeper in his eyes. Fear. Fear for her.

"I don't know what to do," she whispered, her voice cracking. She felt vulnerable—exposed in a way she had never felt before. This power, this legacy—it was all so much to carry, and it was starting to feel like it was too heavy to bear.

"You don't have to carry it alone," Ronan said, his voice low but steady. He stepped closer, his presence a silent promise of protection. "I'm here, Aria. Whatever it is, we'll face it together."

Aria shook her head, looking down at the ground as her fingers twisted nervously at the fabric of her shirt. "But this isn't something you can help me with. This is... it's in my blood, Ronan. My heritage. This isn't about you or me—this is about a power that's been dormant for centuries, waiting for me."

Ronan stepped closer, cupping her face gently in his hands, forcing her to look up at him. "You don't have to carry it alone," he repeated, this time more firmly. "I know this is big. I know you're scared. But you're not alone in this, Aria. You're never alone."

His words, so simple yet so full of conviction, pierced through her uncertainty. The warmth of his touch, the depth of his gaze—it was enough to anchor her, if only for a moment. She closed her eyes, allowing herself to lean into him, to let his presence be a reminder that she wasn't alone, not completely.

But in the back of her mind, the words of the shadow figure still lingered. "You must choose."

It wasn't a decision she could avoid. The choice was hers to make. She didn't know how, but somehow, she had to find the strength to confront whatever darkness was pulling at her from within. She couldn't run from it forever.

She pulled away slightly, her breath shaky. "I don't know if I can handle this, Ronan. The Shadow Alpha—my bloodline—it's all too much. What if I become something I can't control?"

Ronan's expression softened, and he placed a hand over her heart. "Whatever happens, I'll be right here with you. If you fall, I'll pull you back. If you lose yourself, I'll remind you who you are. You're stronger than you think, Aria. You've already made it this far."

His words seemed to sink deep into her soul, a balm for the turmoil inside her. But even as the warmth of his touch lingered, Aria couldn't ignore the gnawing truth inside her. The deeper she went into this journey, the harder it would be to maintain control. The darkness was calling, and it wasn't going to stop.

Her heart ached as she thought of everything she could lose. The world. Ronan. Her humanity. But what choice did she have? If she didn't confront her bloodline's legacy, then everything she cared about would be lost anyway.

"I don't know what's waiting for me on the other side of this, Ronan," she said softly. "But I can't let it destroy everything. I can't let it destroy us."

Ronan gave a small smile, his thumb brushing her cheek. "It won't, Aria. You're stronger than you know. And we'll face whatever comes together."

But even as he spoke, Aria couldn't shake the feeling that the worst was yet to come. The power inside her—the same power that had been dormant for so long—was awakening, and it wasn't just in her blood. It was in her mind, her heart, in the very air she breathed.

Aria stepped back, eyes scanning the vast, empty world around them. The realm between worlds. The Gateway. Everything felt so unreal, so distant from the world she had once known.

"We have to keep moving," she said, her voice more determined now. "I have to find out what this all means. I have to know the truth of my legacy."

Ronan hesitated, his gaze heavy on her. But then, with a nod, he fell into step beside her. "Whatever it takes, Aria. We'll find it. Together."

The two of them walked forward, the wind picking up as they moved deeper into the realm. The land stretched out before them like a vast, empty canvas, waiting to be filled with the choices they would make.

And in the distance, something was watching them—something ancient, something powerful. It was waiting for them to come closer.

Aria could feel it. The force that had been pulling at her for so long. The legacy of the Shadow Alpha.

It was waiting for her to make her choice.
