Chapter 36 - Chapter 36

The air grew thicker as they moved deeper into the heart of the Shadowlands. Each step felt heavier, as though the very ground beneath them was resisting their presence. Aria could feel the weight of it—the power inside her pulling, twisting, as if calling out to something far beyond her reach. Her bloodline, the Moonblood, was awakening in ways she hadn't imagined. It hummed through her veins like fire, alive and untamed.

Beside her, Ronan's presence was a grounding force, but even he couldn't fully hide the unease in his eyes. He was no stranger to danger, but the Shadowlands were different. There was something ancient here, something that had been waiting for her—waiting for them.

They had barely spoken since the encounter with the shadow creatures. The air between them was thick with unspoken words, with questions neither of them were ready to ask. But Aria could feel the tension, could see the worry in Ronan's eyes, and it made her chest ache. She wasn't the only one struggling under the weight of her power; Ronan, too, was carrying the burden of the choices they'd made.

Aria knew, deep down, that this journey would change everything. But what if it wasn't just the world that would change? What if the price of her bloodline—of the power that flowed through her—was something she wasn't prepared to pay?

They reached a clearing, and Aria stopped, her breath catching in her throat as she stared at what lay before them.

A massive stone archway loomed in front of them, its surface covered in intricate symbols and runes that seemed to shift and pulse with life. The archway was unlike anything Aria had ever seen. It was ancient, older than anything in the Shadowlands, and it radiated a dark, forbidding energy.

"This is it," Lucian said, his voice low, almost reverent. "The Gateway."

Aria's heart skipped a beat. "The Gateway? What is it?"

Lucian stepped forward, his eyes scanning the runes. "It's the threshold between worlds. The rift that you sealed is linked to it. And beyond it lies the truth of your bloodline."

The truth. That word echoed in Aria's mind like a drumbeat, a constant reminder that she had yet to uncover the full extent of her power, or the consequences of what she had become.

"What truth?" Aria asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Lucian met her gaze, his expression unreadable. "The truth of who you are, Aria. The truth of your legacy. The truth of your connection to the Shadow Alpha."

Ronan's jaw tightened, but he said nothing. He didn't need to. Aria could feel his concern, could sense the unspoken question in his eyes. He didn't want her to go through with this, but neither did he want to leave her to face it alone.

Taking a deep breath, Aria stepped forward, her gaze fixed on the archway. Her heart raced in her chest, and for a brief moment, she considered turning back. But she knew she couldn't. She had come too far. The journey was already written in the stars, and she was destined to walk this path.

Lucian raised his hand, and the runes on the archway flared with dark energy. "This is the only way forward, Aria. Once you pass through, there's no turning back."

The words hit Aria like a punch to the gut. No turning back. The finality of it settled over her like a shroud. But she wasn't afraid. Not anymore.

With a steadying breath, Aria stepped forward, her fingers brushing against the cold stone of the archway. The moment her touch made contact, the world seemed to blur around her. The air crackled with power, and the ground beneath her feet trembled. She closed her eyes, bracing herself for whatever was to come.

Suddenly, everything went silent.

When she opened her eyes, the world had changed.

The Shadowlands had disappeared. In its place was a vast, empty expanse, stretching out as far as the eye could see. The sky above was a swirling mass of dark clouds, lit by flashes of lightning that illuminated the barren landscape. It was like standing on the edge of the world, a place where time and space had no meaning.

Ronan's hand was on her shoulder, pulling her back, but Aria was frozen in place. Her heart hammered in her chest as she took in the sight before her. There was something ancient here, something that knew her.

"It's the realm between worlds," Lucian's voice echoed from behind her. "The place where your bloodline began. The place where your destiny was forged."

Aria could feel it then—the pulse of her bloodline, deep within the very air around her. It thrummed with life, with power, and with an undeniable darkness.

Suddenly, from the darkness of the horizon, a figure appeared.

It was tall, cloaked in shadow, its face hidden beneath a hood. But even in the obscurity, Aria felt the presence of the creature. It was like a storm had entered the very air around them, dark and powerful.

It stopped just before her, its voice like a thousand whispers, all calling her name at once.

> "Aria… Moonblood… heir of the Shadow Alpha."

Aria's breath caught in her throat. This voice… it was familiar. So familiar. It was the same voice that had whispered to her in her dreams.

"You know who I am?" Aria asked, her voice shaky.

The figure tilted its head, as if studying her. "I know more than you think, child of darkness."

It reached out, its hand coming to rest just inches from her face. Aria could feel the pull of its power, could feel the way the very air around her seemed to vibrate with the force of its presence.

> "I am the first of your bloodline. The one who broke the world," the figure whispered, its voice low and haunting. "And now, you will finish what was started."

Aria's heart stopped. "What do you mean? What are you asking me to do?"

The figure's form began to dissolve into shadows, its voice fading into the wind. "You must choose, Aria. Embrace your legacy, or let it consume you. The world is dying, and only you can save it. But first, you must face the darkness within you."

The ground beneath her feet trembled again, and the figure was gone, leaving only an echo of its words hanging in the air.

Ronan's grip on her shoulder tightened. "What happened? What did it say?"

Aria didn't answer. Her mind was too full, her heart too heavy with the weight of the choice before her. She could feel the darkness inside her, could feel the power that had been awakening, and she knew… she knew that what came next would determine everything.
