Chapter 3 - Shadows In The Road

After Wuton I just kept moving towards the mountains, the home of the scholars, maybe they could help me understand my own powers.

I kept travelling trough the main roads, hiding in the nearby woods whenever someone passed by, most travellers I saw seemed like honest merchants, altough, ever so often, a group of what seemed like thieves or mercenaries passed by, the kind of people you'd want nothing to do with, one time a lone man riding a horse noticed me before I could hide in the woods, so I continued moving, keeping my head down so he would just pass me by without paying attention. It didn't work.

"Who are you to walk alone in such a place." asked the horseman

"Just a traveller sir, one who would like to keep moving."

"Aren't you a bit too young to walk these roads alone, there are bad men lurking in these areas." I could hear the condescendent tone in his voice as he spoke. I didn't answer him

"If you are just a traveller as you claim to be, what is your destination."

"The mountains sir, I wish to meet the scholars."

"Now what would a young boy like you want with the scholars of the mountain."

This conversation was starting to get dangerous, I could tell these man's intentions weren't pure, I placed my hand on the dagger I carried without him noticing, ready to draw it if necessary.

"I can escort you to the next town, to keep you protected"

I could tell my protection wasn't is objective, he had malicious intentions and I wasn't going to travel with him, not when I had other options.

I politely declined his offer but he kept insisting, after a bit he threathened me with his sword, trying to convince me to go with him.

That was all it took.

Almost like it was combined, we both drew our weapons at the same time, he had a longsword, I had a dagger, but he underestimated me, he would never think, not in a million years, that a young boy with a dagger could stand up to him, so he was cocky, he focused on scaring me, not hitting me, that was his first mistake. His second mistake was letting me get close enough to hit him. It just took one well placed stab and suddenly, he was no more, I had killed a man.

I tried not to linger on it, I took his sword, his horse and his food, all he had on him, It would serve me well.
