Chapter 33 - Chapter 33

The forest held its breath as the growl echoed, reverberating through the air like a death knell. Aria's heart skipped a beat, her senses sharp as she turned to look at Ronan, who immediately moved to stand in front of her, his muscles tensed and ready.

The shadows seemed to grow darker, swirling around them, thick and oppressive. The air was heavy with the promise of something terrible.

Lucian didn't flinch. Instead, his expression darkened, his eyes narrowing. He had been in this position before. He'd seen these things.

> "They're here," Lucian muttered. "It's begun."

Ronan's eyes flicked between Lucian and the thickening shadows. "What do you mean? What's coming?"

Lucian stepped forward, his voice low and deadly. "The veil between the realms is weakening, and the dead have begun to rise. These are not just spirits; they are ancient shadows that feed on the living. They are drawn to the Moonblood's power."

Aria felt a chill creep up her spine. She had heard whispers of the Shadow King's dark magic, of spirits trapped between realms, but this—this was something far worse than anything she had ever imagined.

> "How do we stop them?" Aria asked, her voice steady but laced with concern.

Lucian's face tightened, his lips pressed into a grim line. "There's only one way to close the veil—to stop the dead from crossing into our world."

Aria swallowed hard, her throat dry. "What's that?"

> "The Moonblood's blood. It's the key to sealing the rift. But it comes at a price," Lucian said, his eyes never leaving hers. "The blood of the Moonblood is the only thing that can close the veil. However, using it to seal the rift will drain your power, possibly even your life. To give that blood willingly, to sacrifice that much… It's a decision that will change everything."

Ronan's hand tightened around Aria's, his grip possessive and protective. "You're not sacrificing yourself for this, Aria. We'll find another way."

Aria could feel the weight of the choice pressing down on her, the battle for her soul waging within. To save the world, to protect everything she loved, she might have to sacrifice herself. It was a decision she wasn't ready to make, yet she could feel the threads of destiny pulling her toward it.

> "What if I can't do it?" Aria whispered, more to herself than anyone else. "What if the price is too high?"

Lucian's eyes softened, though his face remained grim. "You don't have a choice, Aria. The shadows are already coming. If you don't act, the realms will tear themselves apart. The death toll will be far greater than anything you can imagine."

A deep, guttural growl sounded from the trees, followed by the unmistakable sound of heavy footsteps. Something—someone—was coming.

> "They're getting closer," Lucian said, his tone warning them.

Aria's pulse quickened. "What do we do?"

Lucian's eyes glinted with something dangerous—something she couldn't quite place. "You fight, Moonblood. You fight with everything you have. Because what's coming isn't just a war—it's the beginning of the end."

The ground beneath them trembled as dark figures emerged from the forest's depths, their forms shifting and flickering between solid and shadow. They were like nothing Aria had ever seen. Their eyes glowed with an unnatural light, their bodies flickering between flesh and smoke. They were the dead—creatures from beyond the veil—and they were here for her.

Ronan stepped forward, his form blocking Aria's, his eyes blazing with protective fury.

> "You will not have her," he growled, his voice low and filled with a fierce warning.

Lucian stepped into the clearing, his gaze fixed on the advancing shadows. "Stay behind me, both of you. These creatures are not something you can defeat with strength alone."

Aria felt the power in her blood stirring, a familiar warmth, but this time it felt different. It was stronger, more intense. The Moonblood within her was alive, awakening with a hunger she hadn't realized existed. She could feel the rift opening wider, the pull of the other side growing stronger.

> "No," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Not yet. I won't use my blood yet."

Ronan glanced over his shoulder, his expression full of determination. "We're not losing you to this, Aria."

But the creatures were closing in, and time was running out.

> "It's time," Lucian said, his voice grim. "The veil is collapsing. There's no other way."

Without waiting for another word, Lucian raised his hands, summoning a dark magic that crackled in the air like a storm. The shadows flinched at his command, but they kept coming, relentless, hungry. The very air seemed to vibrate with the energy of the rift. The balance between the realms was shifting, and Aria could feel it in every cell of her body.

> "You must act now, Aria," Lucian said urgently. "This is your moment. Close the rift. Use your blood, your power."

But Aria hesitated. She didn't want to lose herself. She wasn't sure if she could come back from this. Was the sacrifice too great? Was the world worth everything?

Ronan's hand found hers again, warm and steady. "I believe in you," he whispered. "You are not alone."

Aria met his gaze, her heart racing. The magic inside her surged, and she knew what she had to do. The world needed her. But more than that, she needed to find her own path.

> "Let's end this," Aria said, her voice steady now. "Together."

With a deep breath, Aria focused all her energy, all the power of the Moonblood within her. The air around them crackled, the veil between the realms began to tear wider, and she knew that there was no turning back.

With a cry of pure will, Aria released her power into the rift, the dark magic swirling as it cascaded from her fingertips like a torrent of light. The air screamed as the rift closed, the shadows howling in fury. The creatures recoiled, their forms dissipating like smoke in the wind.

But as the last of the magic left her, she felt the weight of the price. Her energy drained, leaving her weak, her knees buckling beneath her.

Ronan caught her, holding her close as the world around them began to settle.

> "You did it," he whispered, his voice filled with awe and fear.

Aria could barely lift her head. "I had no choice."

But the war wasn't over. It had only just begun.
