Chapter 5 - Chapter 5

Her eyes are wide, and she can't help but stare at it, it was released. Free.

The massive, dangerous and terrifying beast was free. Surely it hadn't escaped. Surely not.

And then, he walks out. And the fire-breathing behemoth's flames dies down, and it stares down at him.

He walks casually further out of the building, then turns, halfway down the red carpet, staring up at the beast. It wilts under his gaze.

It wilts. That massive fucking thing is scared.

She can hardly comprehend it.

And then, the man moves with impossible speed, it looked like teleportation to everyone, even her. One moment, he's standing casually, looking up at the dragon with a hand on his pocket, the next, he's standing on the dragon's head, still casual.

The dragon tries to look up at him, like when you would place a dog treat on a dog's head, it looked almost cute for a second, but then that image is completely shattered as the dragon unfurls it's wings again, it's wingspan larger than the building.

It stands on it's hind legs and let's out an ear-splitting roar, it's serrated teeth on display, and many people start vomiting, their ears bleeding.

And then, with a powerful stroke of wings, and a gust of wind that sits everyone onto their ass, the dragon's gone, and so is he.

She looks around wildly, looking for them, and she sees them in the distant, flying off in the direction of Obsidian Castle, the humongous black castle that the city had been built around.

She sighs, how was she to ever catch up? She had heard of the prowess of the Obsidian Syndicate, but it seemed the royals in the Cornucopia had no idea of their true strength. In fact, no one she had known in the Cornucopia suggest they were this powerful.

Which could only mean one thing. They had been hiding it.

And now, he had publicly displayed his power, which – again – could only mean one thing.

War.

Everyone knew it was coming, but no one knew how soon, and no one knew that it would hardly be a war, but a one-sided slaughter.

She had never met the Queen face-to-face, she was due to, obviously, as she was to be appointed her right-hand-woman, but she hadn't ended up meeting her. But she could roughly gage at her power, based on historical knowledge, she hadn't engaged in many fights, but over a thousand years she was bound to have some feats.

And she knew that the Queen had never displayed enough power to come close to matching his power.

She sighs to herself, she knew what side she was taking. That was why she was here, this just reaffirmed it. The Queen was a tyrant, she had, by most accounts, been a good Queen, but over time it seems she became more ruthless and lackadaisical towards her subjects. Indifferent.

This war would hopefully be decisive, but no matter what, in the end she hoped the Guild would be better rulers then the Queen. And so far, they had proven themselves to be, their city was thriving, and despite allowing in anyone who wanted to come in, it seemed everyone was a devout follower, something that could only be accomplished through qualitative leadership.

And now, it was time for her to become devout herself; by imbuing semi-permanence into her decision, she would join the Guild. And to do that, she needed to go to the Guild Hall, which was the closest building to the castle, and one of the biggest too. Only the auction house and the castle were bigger.

She made her way through the streets, this time flexing her power to weave her way at a high-speed through the crowds, most weren't strong enough to even catch a glimpse of her as she arrived at the Guild Hall in minutes.

She walked through the large entryway, there were no doors as there would be no point – they would always be open.

The entryway was large, like in most buildings, to accommodate for the different species that lived in the city, the minotaur she had seen before was not the biggest in this city – not by a longshot.

She joins a queue, there were multiple so she goes to the shortest one, they all lead to a clerk who sits in a room embedded into the wall, a desk between the client and the clerk, and a glass screen above the desk, only a small gap is between the desk and the glass screen, allowing for items to be passed through.

The clerks are all rabbits. They hated being called that, as they were more human than rabbit, but that was the easiest way to put it. They were short humans, but with fur all over them and a rabbit head, they were capable of speech and had a higher average IQ than humans, by quite a bit, but most were incapable of magic, and those who were didn't have enough of it to become a wizard or witch, which is why they ended up as workers, or strategic leaders. No doubt there would be rabbits behind the scenes in the Guild, doing the heavy lifting.
